Warsaw Village Band

Postby ego » 2005-12-16, 0:44

Yesterday I listened to the song "To you Kasiunia", and I can assure you that band has one more most loyal fan. I tried to look for the lyrics but I couldn't find them in any English site. Could you find them in a Polish site maybe? I would really appreciate it.
Thanks a lot!

I listened the song and wrote down the lyrics. I marked into red what I am not sure. There is a moment in the song that I can't hear fully so the red words are only my suspicions. So more or less accurate lyrics and my translation:

Warsaw Village Band - Do Ciebie Kasiuniu
do ciebie Kasiuniu, do ciebie jedziemy
to you Kasiunia, to you we are going
na powagę boską trzewiczki wieziemy
for God's dignity we are carrying booties
trzewiczki ze złota, otwórz Kasiu wrota, to ci darujemy
golden booties, open Kasia the door, so we will give you
trzewiczki ze złota, otwórz Kasiu wrota, to ci darujemy
golden booties, open Kasia the door, so we will give you

do ciebie Kasiuniu, do ciebie jedziemy
to you Kasiunia, to you we are going
na powagę boską sukienkę wieziemy
for God's dignity we are carrying a dress
sukienka ze złota, otwórz Kasiu wrota, to ci darujemy
the golden dress, open Kasia the door, so we will give you
sukienka ze złota, otwórz Kasiu wrota, to ci darujemy
the golden dress, open Kasia the door, so we will give you

do ciebie Kasiuniu, do ciebie jedziemy
to you Kasiunia, to you we are going
na powagę boską pierścionki wieziemy
for God's dignity we are carrying rings
pierścionki ze złota, otwórz Kasiu wrota, to ci darujemy
golden rings, open Kasia the door, so we will give you
pierścionki ze złota, otwórz Kasiu wrota, to ci darujemy
golden rings, open Kasia the door, so we will give you

do ciebie Kasiuniu, do ciebie jedziemy
to you Kasiunia, to you we are going
na powagę boską Jasieńka wieziemy
for God's dignity we are carrying Jasieniek
Jasieńka ze złota, otwórz Kasiu wrota, to ci darujemy
golden Jasieniek, open Kasia the door, so we will give you
Jasieńka ze złota, otwórz Kasiu wrota, to ci darujemy
golden Jasieniek, open Kasia the door, so we will give you

Indeed! Being a native Polish speaker, I find it very often difficult to understand the yelling women from the Warsaw Village Band ;)

When I listen to their voices, my mind goes to the first Indoeuropean populations coming to Europe and settling in the plains of Poland. I guess their songs would be polyphonic and sound like this one. Your language sounds (and is) very archaic and it promotes this impression of mine. Or am I too lingofreak?

Well, it is, but the Warsaw Village Band additionally want their songs to sound like folk music, partially by pronouncing some words in a dialect-like way. They also distort some forms and use words that do not normally occur in the standard modern Polish, but merely in its regional variants.
I believe that each dialect does have something from a very very old form of the general language, so your impressions and associations seem to be quite justified, so to say.
However, don't forget that the pure modern Polish is quite different from the one you can listen to in the WVB's songs :)

Are Polish dialects so different from each other?

Yes, I think they mostly are. They usually have some words that don't exist in any other dialect, sometimes maybe also some specific inflection patterns...

Why all "u" in the song sound like perfect /o/ to me? Is this how you pronounce u, or is it the dialect?

You are right ego, I hear there more "o" than "u" too. It is something between. This is only a matter of dialect.

DO CIEBIE KASIUNIU DO CIEBIE JEDZIEMY

TRZEWICZKI ZE ZŁOTA
OTWÓRZ KASIU WROTA

DO CIEBIE KASIUNIU DO CIEBIE JEDZIEMY
NA KOWANYM WÓZKU JASIEŃKA WIEZIEMY
