Best accent of the English language ?

Postby TomBecker » 2014-09-27, 12:57

I personally like British and Aussie accents the most.

But I also like the North American . I am the most exposed to that accent like most other people around the world because of the American movies\music\TV series.

I find the Scottish accent the most difficult to fake , while the standard Irish is fairly easy .

I personally hate hearing English with Israeli accent. I always use and Americanized accent when speaking English .

I already wrote about this.

My favorite North American accents:
St. John's NL (''townie Newfie''), other Irish Newfoundland accents, North country NY & Vermont, Mountain West, Oregon, Washington, inland California, some southern accents (Oklahoma, Texas Panhandle, Metroplex)

My favorite accent outside of North America:
Dublin (traditional accent aka ''local''; ''mainstream'' accent is okay with me too, but I hate ''new Dublin'')

I'm not too keen on British, Australian and Kiwi accents.

I honestly have a hard time telling Australian and Kiwi accents apart, takes me awhile listening to a person before I might suspect they are from NZ. So yeah, since they're so similar to me I find it sort of amusing you don't like the Australian accent hehe.

As for accents that I like, I don't really have a strong preference though I do like slavic accents. As for ones that I don't like, I sort of have this thing against English accents. Don't know why :)

Jemaine: Yes
Brett: What'd it sound like?
Jemaine: Well, ah, kinda like an evil version of our accent.

That's odd. Most kiwis find that Australians do have distinct accents. And the times I've been in Australia, they've had little difficulty telling I'm kiwi. Hmmm.

Yes, I've talked with many people here and they also tell me they can quite easily distinguish between them too so I know I'm a bit of an anomaly :) If I watch the NZ news for example I can more readily pick up they're from NZ, but even still it will take a minute or two to realise something is "off", or they say something that quite obviously shows they're from NZ. I grew up with some maori friends from NZ so perhaps that long term exposure made it difficult for me to distinguish? :hmm:

This is always a possibility. I have a friend in Melbourne who also has trouble telling that I'm kiwi - but then he's got a kiwi mother, so you're probably right.

I found it hard to tell apart Strine and Kihwih for a long time. If you don't know what to listen for (some of the short vowels, mainly) they really aren't that different.

Scottish...
It is the only accent with clear and unbroken "r" (I'm not that familiar with the accents, there are most likely other ones with rolled r, but this one is the most iconic for me) and with clear vowels. It is just not that ugly as are "regular" british or american accents.
Besides, for me as a native Slav, it is definitely the easiest accent to speak. And also it is really pleasing to listen to it:)

Neil Oliver is an amazing Scottish narrator:

I also kind of like Aussie speech, but I'm not able to reproduce it because it's not that prominent such as scottish is and I couldn't really find material to listen to.
Can anyone suggest me some aussie series perhaps with a lot of their accent:)?

Thank God You're Here is a nice little Australian show. The entire series is on YouTube, if I remember correctly.

Neighbors is an American movie with one Australian in the cast. You can probably do better than that. 8-)

Nope, it's a 30 season drama (drama being a fad euphemism for soap opera)

I like the Scottish, but also German/Austrian/Swiss people that speak English.

Those accents sound so dopey to me it's actually kind of charming.
