Russian mortality

I thought this was a fascinating read. Why are so many Russians dying young? As with many such things, there's no clear answer.

Thank you for sharing the article! I like its rather poetical sad ending.

The huge problem is healthcare system. Healthcare spending is only 3% of Russian GDP, and quality of state-funded medicine is very low, especially outside big cities or oil regions. I think and hope improvements are being made though.

Despite that, some month ago Russia showed a positive natural growth: http://www.forbes.com/sites/markadomani ... iet-union/

Do you have any statistics? Because I found on Wiki that the Russian mortality rate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_so ... ality_rate) is not that high for Eastern Europe and that the Russian life expectancy is pretty much the same as the one of Ukraine and Belarus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_co ... expectancy), which doesn't fly with what Masha wrote.

Huh. And I always assumed the lower life expectancy in Russian men was caused mainly by alcoholism.
