"Tusen takk" for doing such a fantastic job with the "dictionary user guide" abyssopelagic! :y:

Would the following be an acceptable translation for the headline Storms sabotage Easter holidays?

Uvær sabotere påskeferien
That is a perfectly fine translation! You're only missing an "r" at the end of "sabotere". I'm not sure about the exact rule, but Norwegian/English uses tense a differently.

Jeg lest fra en nettside det følgende setning: "Planeten ligger knappe 20 lysår unna, men har en tykk atmosfære av karbondioksid som kan umuliggjøre liv." Hva mener "umuliggjøre", Jeg vil tro at "umulig"+"gjøre" = "make impossible", men atmosfære av karbondioksid ville gjøre det mulig for liv, ikke umulig, nei?

"The planet lies just short of(*) 20 lightyears away, but it has a thick atmosphere of Carbon Dioxide which could make it impossible for life (to exist there)".

* "knapt" is a bit less than, I can't remember a good equivalent in english to compare it to right now.

The sentence as it stands states that there is a huge amount of CO^2 there, and that this "makes the possibility of life impossible". I won't delve into the biology here, but I guess a too large percentage of CO2 compared to for instance O2 would decrease the possibility a bit.

^makes sense, I was just thrown off because the article was about planets that could potentially harbor life.

Hi,

My colleague's daughter is graduating tomorrow with her master's degree. I recently moved to Norway and haven't picked up enough to now how to write a congratulations card? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

A.

Since you are just beginning to learn Norwegian, I'm sure your colleague and his/her daughter would appreciate any attempt on your part to write something in Norwegian. If you wanted to keep it very short and simple you could just write "Congratulations!":

If you'd like to write more than just "Gratulerer" here are some other possibilities that were suggested to me in another thread by long time forum member EinarJ, who is fluent på norsk :y: :

EinarJ wrote:Gratulerer med fullføringen av studiet.
"Congratulations with completing your studies"

Gratulerer med vel gjennomført eksamen.
"Congratulations with well completed exams"

Gratulerer med vel gjennomførte studier
"Congratulations with well completed studies"

Lykke til! (Good luck!) :y:

Hva er noen av de forskjellige måtene mann kunne skrive følgende overskrift på norsk?

Rain Arrives to Drought-Stricken Southern California

Her er mitt forsøk:

Regn ankommer til tørkerammede Sør-California

Cut the prefix an- and you're golden! :D

Despite being a more indirect translation, a more native-like way of phrasing it would be Regn ventes i tørkerammede Sør-California.

When rain arrives from one location (Northern California f.ek.) to another (Southern California f.ek.), couldn't you make the argument that the rain is in a sense "traveling" OR is the use of "ankommer" reserved for passengers traveling by train, plane, or boat?

Aleco wrote:Despite being a more indirect translation, a more native-like way of phrasing it would be Regn ventes i tørkerammede Sør-California.
Would the use of "ventes" in this context change the meaning of the headline from "Rain arrives" (it is already raining) to "Rain expected" (Rain is in the weather forecast, but it hasn't actually started raining yet)?

På forhånd takk for hjelpen! :)

It should work, but:
du ankommer Oslo
du kommer til Oslo
You can't mix the two ;)

However, you do have a point as "ankomme" as its own verb is a foreign concept, and therefore it sounds rather ... forced, I guess. Usually you only use this word in settings of public transport (e.g. over the PA or on time tables), which in turn leads to it being a verb that most people only do associate with traveling.

You are right! Nicely spotted! I was going to comment on that, but I wrote my answer over a span of two hours (I was cooking :P ), so I forgot, sorry!

Is the compound word Videotorg often used as the Norwegian equivalent for the English expression "video on demand" (often abbreviated VOD)?

Her er en beskrivelse av Videotorg / (VOD):

Video on demand (VOD) er et system som gjør det mulig å se videoklipp over et nettverk som del av et interaktivt tv-system. Man kan «streame» innholdet i sanntid eller laste ned innholdet til en set top boks før man starter visningen.
