Need help translating/identifying flag

Postby Fear_a_Phléasc » 2014-06-25, 20:59

I got this flag and have no idea of its origin or meaning. I don't even know if it's Arabic or Farsi.

If it is Farsi, can anyone tell me what it says?

It's bilingual Arabic/Kurdish. Using the help of Google Translate, the Arabic, and presumably the Kurdish, translates to "The Fifth Infantry Brigade / First Regiment".

If I may ask, how did you come to own such a flag? I think it's a relic from the Iraqi Kurdish Civil War.

Found it at a pawn shop, believe it or not. I was just struck with how it looked and they didn't know anything about it. The only thing I could figure out myself is the IGFC I think means Iraqi Ground Force Command.

Very curious piece - I'll have to research the Civil War and maybe find more out about it. Thanks for your tips!
