I don't see an issue with gender either (straight here, as well) - I don't have a problem with my naked body being exposed to either sex in that context, and I don't understand why anyone should.

I would feel so awkward changing among women :para: At the gym I change with other men and it's fine. I don't care about their sexuality because I don't go there for sex, I don't even stare in the restroom -in fact, I don't know why, but the guys that go to my gym end up having a null sex-appeal for me-.

I'll just change in the washroom stall or if I can't, I'll use a towel to cover myself.

No matter which sex.

- How common are saunas in your country?

Not so common, however most of the bigger swimming pools have them. Also some wellness resorts and hotels offer them.
The gym here has one as well, but I barely use it. I can use it for free tho'.
- How much does it cost to go to a public sauna?

Actually I don't know, but let's have a look.
http://dewelle.nl/tarieven
€15.60 including the swimming pool.

http://www.eekeburen.nl/html/tarieven.html
€12.50 without using the swimming pool.

- What do you usually wear inside?

A towel.
- Do men and women go inside together?

Depends.
- What is the usual temperature in the sauna?

I don't know, I'd guess around 80C.

About the changing room: I wouldn't feel comfortable in a mixed room. But that might be because I'm used to men because I played football.

Nobody has spoken about the biggest pleasure about sauna. It's coming from the heat and jumping into cold water or in wintertime, into the snow or even into a hole made in the ice cover of a frozen waterbody. Feels divine! That's why a good sauna has to be situated at the shore of some lake or river. And after that it's big pleasure to return into the heat again.

Another thing: you cut some branches with lots of leaves from a birchtree, tie together and put into water for a day or so. The thing is called viht in Estonian. It becomes soft in the water and in the sauna you beat yourself with it. I guess it's a kind of massage you get from it. There is a saying that you beat your bones soft with the viht, in other words, you beat your muscles relaxed. An old tradition. Usually people made lots of vihts in summer and stored them, so they could use them during the winter also.

Polish are a bit prude when it comes to saunas. There are no mixed saunas (I think), and even the specimens of a single sex don't feel comfortable with each other. Of course that's a major generalisation, but still...

I had a sort of mini-sauna today. I sat outside for a while, where it was 43 then jumped in the cold shower. It was pretty interesting. I got a headache.

Oh, and it's also very nice to go out in summers after sauna, especially if it's raining! :)

I love vihta's (a Finnish word for the same thing). The smell is so good. :) I couldn't think a Christmas without sauna and vihta!
I've also heard that vihta's has some soap-like things in it. Very very long ago, when nobody has a soap, they used to use vihta's for washing themselves.

Finnish sauna customs were already mentioned, so I'll tell my own habits. I like the temperature to be something between 60-80 C. The best is probably 70 C. I go to sauna very often, almost every day, and I couldn't think about living without a sauna! :D We have a sauna heated by wood and I prefer it better than electric ones. It's more humid. :) (Was that the right word?)

- How common are saunas in your country?
You find them at public pools usually. Some have them in their homes, or mountain cabins.

- How much does it cost to go to a public sauna?
I paid 3.5€ back when I was a kid. I don't know how much it has changed.

- What do you usually wear inside?
Swimsuit or towel.

- Do men and women go inside together?
Yes, when at public baths where the sauna is somewhere out by the pool. But usually each changing room has its own sauna.

- What is the usual temperature in the sauna?
Honestly don't know.

- Is it allowed/possible to throw water on the stones?
Yes, that's pretty common.

- How common are saunas in your country?
Pretty uncommon actually. Saunas can only be found in health centres, beauty farms and holiday resorts. In other cases a sauna almost always has a sexual connotation. Gay saunas are well known, but one can find saunas in sex clubs for straight people as well.

- How much does it cost to go to a public sauna?
I do not know how much the entrance of a sauna cost in a health centre or a beauty farm. In a gay sauna it's easy 15 till 20 euros. Though, it depends on the theme of that day, how hung you are and how young you are. Young boys (16 till 22) and hung men (> 20 cm) can usually enter the sauna for free or for a very small amount.

- What do you usually wear inside?
Depends on the sauna. In some saunas you'll be allowed to wrap a towel around your waist. In other saunas you'll be completely naked.

- Do men and women go inside together?
In health centres and beauty farms men and women have seperate saunas. In holiday resorts men and women can enter the same sauna.

- What is the usual temperature in the sauna?
I don't know.

- Is it allowed/possible to throw water on the stones?
I've never seen stones in a sauna at all.

- What do you usually wear inside?

Nothing, just a towel to sit or lay on.

- Do men and women go inside together?

Yes, I've never seen a separate sauna for men and women

- What is the usual temperature in the sauna?

90°C - 95°C

In Moldova saunas are usually popular among men, but not only.

So, to answer your question

- How common are saunas in your country?
Yes, very common.
- How much does it cost to go to a public sauna?
No public saunas anymore. There are some old Russian banya's, but not sure whether they're public anymore. Finnish sauna is also popular. Last time it was $25-20/hour (but we used to go 3-4 people and take up to 3 hours)
- What do you usually wear inside?
:)
- Do men and women go inside together?
if they know eachother. Or if the women are prostitutes and the men paid for that service.
- What is the usual temperature in the sauna?
from 60 up to 90-95

Can you imagine a sauna at 15°C / 35°C? What kind of sauna would it be?
