Numbers - Αριθμοί

Postby bender » 2014-03-17, 23:35

Γειά σας!

First question!

I learned that in Modern Greek the numbers 7, 8 and 9 have different forms.

εφτά / επτά
οχτώ / οκτώ
εννιά / εννέα

Is one form preferred over the other one? If so, which one is preferred and why? Or does it vary according to accents?

Thanks in advance!

The first word in each of your pairs is the more colloquial version, while the second word is more formal (they're the ancient Greek word), but in Greek, formal forms are very common, even in everyday speech, so you'll hear them a lot.
