I am looking for a good Method to learn Quechua

Postby peruexplorer » 2006-09-02, 13:40

Hello everybody in this Quechua forum.
I just have a simple question, I am looking for a good method to learn quechua because I would like to learn this language, my wife is also interested :-)

Unfortunately I don't find much information as I want, can you tell me about a good method with Cd and book? I know that 14 years ago the BBC developped a Quechua Method, but I can't find it on internet.

In Peru I bought a book, Quechua in 40 lessons but I found there was a lack of information about grammar.

Thank you very much

I would say the main reason no one answered is that no one knows an answer... I find it quite hard to find good materials for Quechua. Your book might be the same one I have - if that is the case, I know it has a lot of weaknesses, but so far it is still one of the better ones I found. In my university mediothek they have some materials with tapes or CDs, but I didn't get that good an impression of them. If you want, I could still check what they are called. One was based in English, one in German, I think... One thing is, though - what Quechua do you want to learn? The book you might have is of Cusco Quechua, but the courses I mentioned above are of different versions. One was I think Cochabamba Quechua, the other one I am not sure (one problem is that a lot of courses don't specify)...

I am back from my vacation now, so I will work more on my course here, of course you are invited to follow it if you want, but I don't know if it will be good or bad, it is a bit of an experiment on my part. Also maybe if bluechiron returns she might continue her course and you could follow that one...

There are a few websites, but the one that is said to be best to me seems structured in a way that is too difficult for most beginners, while the others seem very basic. I will still look for their adresses though and post them here when I found them...

How determined are you to learn Quechua? What is your motivation? Are you in Peru/go there quite often? In that case, your best option might be to do a course there. I know there are courses in Lima and Cusco and I am pretty sure there are more in other towns... In Cusco I did a course in the CBC (Centro Bartolomé de Las Casas). They offer six weeks intensive courses that are quite costly though, but they also offer six weeks evening courses (three evenings a week) that are quite cheap and have a lot of different levels. Other places in Cusco that I know of are the Academia de la lengua Quechua and the University...

I found a book online that is quite detailed in learning Quechua. Unfortunately, they do not explain very well and it is extremely difficult to learn at times what they mean.

Just thought I'd point out that this is part of a website that looks really useful:

http://www.quechua.org.uk

I think I'm going to use that a lot while I'm studying Quechua. :D

I realize it's an old thread, but perhaps it can turn into a resource thread for (Ayacucho) Quechua or something.

Anyway, there's a nice course with audio here:
http://facultad.pucp.edu.pe/ciencias-so ... a/home.htm
I believe it's a course on the Quechua de Ayacucho. I'm more interested in Ayacuchan Quechua, so that's what i've looked for mostly.

Also check out:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/92707828/Gram ... ca-QUECHUA
I think there's another place where the next course is online, but if not:
https://web.archive.org/web/20120614193 ... home_i.htm
That site has been uploaded as a PDF to scribd, too: http://www.scribd.com/doc/33624047/El-Curso-Quechua

In English, there's the Spoken Ayacucho Quechua, which is a bit dull. It's an FSI-style course but leaves a lot of things without explaining. There are two volumes. I also came across a Spanish version that was essentially the same, though it seemed slightly revised (some dialogs used different words, etc.). I don't remember where i got it from, though it might be this.

Two books that i haven't been able to find but seem interesting are:
Quechua: manual de enseñanza
Gramática Quechua Ayacucho-Chanca
...both by Clodoaldo Soto Ruiz. I believe they teach (or taught, at least) Quechua at a university in the US, as there's an online course offered that lists them as a contact.

I do remember coming across a couple really nice courses for Bolivian Quechua, though i can't recall their names off the top of my head.

EDIT: I found an old note i'd written with some links to resources. Unfortunately some of them have been taken offline since:
https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp ... _shimikuna (lots of links to material for learning Quechua, though i'm not sure which varieties they cover.)
http://www.lengamer.org/admin/language_ ... UECHUA.pdf (this is a grammar for the Quechua of Cuzco)

There were also some computer programs for learning Quechua, but i can't remember what they were. One may just have been a version of the yachay course, but it's been a while. Perhaps this was one of them? It was also for the Cuzqueño variety.

Also, some words every Quechua learner needs to know:

ERIC has some Quechua resources pending for PDF release, including Spoken Ayacucho Quechua (which is where this document, and others, originated). Though considering none of them are released yet, your best best for the moment is to search the internet for them.

The Quechua courses were available there a few years back, i believe, i don't remember what happened but i think a lot of stuff got removed from the site. They've been "pending" for a while now, though, so i'm not holding my breath for them to be put back online there.

This might be the Bolivian course i had that seemed really good. I feel like things were actually explained well and it seemed pretty comprehensive. I might be confusing it with something else, but i think that's it.

I really enjoy Quechua, i think it's a really cool, beautiful, and expressive language :)

Hmm, is there any way to access it?

I can say that many Quechua courses on the web focus only on vocabulary: colors, family, numbers, verbs, etc. Learning vocabulary is fine, but if you don't know how to use those words, they will be of little use to you, that's why it's important to learn grammar, probably learning a language through grammar is more difficult than other methods. But in the case of Quechua there are not many resources on the web and I believe that learning grammar is the best option available, in my opinion.
You can find a free course of Quechua grammar in this website: quechualanguage.com.
If you want more QUECHUA, you can visit my free online course of quechua which is in English and in Spanish
