Elaine - Ελληνικά (Δημοτική)

Postby Multiturquoise » 2013-11-21, 13:45

Γεια σας!

Αυτό είναι το ιδιωτικό μου θέμα. Θα ρωτήσω τις ερωτήσεις μου για τα ελληνικά σε αυτό το θέμα.
This is my personal thread. I’ll ask my questions about Greek in this thread.

Μπορείς να διορθώσεις αυτό το κείμενο, όπως επίσης θα γράψω στα αγγλικά.
You can correct this thext, as I will also write in English.

Ίσως μπορώ να πάω στην Ελλάδα τον χειμώνα. Θέλω πολύ να πάω στην Ελλάδα.
Maybe I can go to Greece in winter. I really want to go to Greece.

I wrote some sentences.

Πού είναι η κουβέρτα;
Πού έβαλες τις εφημερίδες;
Σας παρακαλώ διορθώστε τα λάθη μου.
Γιατί έφαγες το φαγητό μου;
Περπατάω στο σχολείο ακούγοντας μουσική.
Πού έβαλες το κλειδί;
Γιατί πήγες;
Μου αρέσει αυτή η κοπέλα.
Σας παρακαλώ μην παίξτε στον δρόμο.
Μια εβδομάδα αποτελείται από επτά ημέρες.

I want to ask something: Which person form should I use when I want to say "Believing is good. (It's good to believe)" "Not knowing is bad. (It's bad not to know)" "This is being able to speak a language." etc.

Sorry for the long time it took me to get back at your request.
I will use red for cases were the meaning is compromised, blue for cases were the conjugation was wrong, and green in case I want to suggest a different style.

Αυτό είναι το προσωπικό μου θέμα.
Ιδιωτικό = private (ιδιωτικότητα = privacy)
προσωπικό (adjective) = personal; !! το προσωπικό (noun) = personnel, staff, employees

αφού θα το γράψω επίσης στα αγγλικά.

όπως means "as" when you are saying that one thing acts as another, eg τρέξε όπως ο άνεμος = run as the wind = run like the wind.
You need an object there, in this case the pronoun το, referring to το κείμενο.
Επίσης will have to come after the verb in this sentence. Style suggestion: use και: θα το γράψω και στα αγγλικά, it's a more natural/colloquial way of expressing "as well".

Αυτοί μιλάνε ελληνικά, γιατί είναι Έλληνες.

We wouldn't place a comma there.

Σας παρακαλώ μην παίζετε στον δρόμο.

Okay, this requires a somehow lengthy explanation.
First, how to negate an imperative: to give a negative command, you use the subjunctive ((να) <verb>) and the particle μην: να μην παίξε παίξεις, να μην γράψε γράψεις, να μην παίξτε παίξετε, να μην γράψτε γράψετε. "Να", the subjunctive marker can optionally be dropped in the negation because the negation particle can only be followed by the subjunctive, so there's no need to mark that twice.

Secondly, you used the aorist/simple past there, which has a perfective aspect. This makes the negative command refer to an action that is not currently taking place, and in fact, it's completely hypothetical, eg "όταν σας συλλάβουν να μην μιλήσεις" = when they arrest you, don't talk.
To ask someone to stop doing something they are currently doing, you need to use the simple present which was a continuous aspect, eg "σας έχουν συλλάβει, μην μιλάτε" = you have been arrested, don't talk."

Now, there's always the chance you did meant to say "when you decide to go play outside, don't play in the street" instead of "you are currently playing in the street, so please stop playing in the street", but in any case you cannot negate a verb in the imperative, you need to use the subjunctive.
"If you like your clause structure, you can keep your clause structure"

How can we translate English "one" (or French "on" or German "man") into Greek?

How do you translate "Not knowing is bad."? Which gender and which person?

I would be pleased if you answered those questions.

Caitlín wrote:How can we translate English "one" (or French "on" or German "man") into Greek?

There's no one equivalent, but many possibilities depending on the context:
- κανείς/κάποιος can be used in certain cases
- the passive is common, "wie schreibt man dieses Wort?" = "πώς γράφεται αυτή η λέξη;"
- the second person for general statements,
- the third person plural can be used like a passive, "wie sagt man X auf Deutsch?" could be translated "πώς λένε Χ στα γερμανικά;"
- even the first person plural, like in recipes you'll see things like "Ανάβουμε τον φούρνο μας στους 175 βαθμούς"
But these aren't interchangeable so it really depends on the specific sentence.

How do you translate "Not knowing is bad."? Which gender and which person?

If it's a general statement, then it's probably best to use a noun-equivalent in Greek, something like "η αμάθεια είναι κακή", but you can also use κανείς/κάποιος or the second person singular, e.g., "το να μην ξέρεις είναι κακό". But if the context implies a subject, then you'd have to use that. Again, it really depends on context.

Ευχαριστώ πολύ, modus.irrealis!

Hello again. I'm back from university. I'm partially struggling at understanding Katharevousa texts. The text below is extracted by me from a public-domain book:

Ο Θεός έθετο τους πόνους της τιμωρίας ως επακολούθημα της εν τη αμαρτία παραφροσύνης. Αλλ' ο άνθρωπος όστις είναι ελεύθερος να εκλέξη μεταξύ του καλού και του κακού, αμαρτάνων οικειοθελώς υποβάλλει εαυτόν ταις ποιναίς.

How do you translate the text in Δημοτική and English?

Thank you.

:lol:
