Another Afrikaans course

Postby Levo » 2012-08-15, 21:47

Haai!
I would so like to restart learning Afrikaans. I haven't got much free time, and browsing for material on the net is not always so fun (or not any more after several languages). And Afrikaans is like a new life :)

I'm just attracted by Afrikaans language and also very interested in the cultural background of the native-speakers. In Hungary, there isn't too much connection with it.

Anyway, I would be so grateful if some kind Afrikaaner people would take the effort and teach their language here in small pieces a few times a week, beginning from the basics :) I'm a fast learner, I just need the encourage and the will each day to have a look at it again and again, useful words-grammar collected in one place - living a busy life nowadays :) I could also teach something if I may be of any help, or just show bits of my environment if you're interested. It would be so fun!
Baaie dankie in advance and I hope I can write my next post partly in Afrikaans! :)
Anyone?

Ongelukkig kan ek jou nie hiermee help nie, want ek gaan, te danke aan my eksamens, vir die volgende paar maande nie op die internet wees nie.

Ek beplan egter om volgende jaar my Afrikaanse kursus te ontwikkel / van voor af te begin - hopelik sal jy hom dan kan gebruik (as jy hom teen daardie tyd nog nodig het).

Unfortunately I can't help you with this, because, thanks to my exams, I'm not going to be on the internet for the next few months.

I do, however, plan to develop / restart my Afrikaans course next year - hopefully you'll be able to use it then (if you still need it by that time).

In Afrikaans, we write all languages and nationalities (as well as all the days of the week and months of the year) with capital letters. This is also valid for adjectives that are related to languages/nationalities - e.g. " 'n Duitse naam" (a German name), "Russiese tee" (Russian tea), "Spaanse musiek" (Spanish music), etc. :)

Further, we always place an "en" between the last two items of a list. However, a comma never appears before an "en".
(You'll see that commas do appear before "en" in literarue, but in those cases, other rules come into play.)

Geniet die Afrikaanse studies! :) (Enjoy the Afrikaans studies!)
Native: Afrikaans (af) English (en) || Intermediate: German (de) || Beginner: Some odd combination of Riksmål and Bokmål and whatever (no) || Learning on-and-off: Russian (ru) || Curious: Breton (br) Welsh (cy) Finnish (fi)

Baaie dankie, Shiba!
The corrections are good to see, also, because it seems like word order more resembles my native language, so it seems more logical and familiar this way :)

As for my first post, I would like to apologize and correct myself, since it could even be misinterpreted:
I meant native-Afrikaans-speaker to chat with.

Ek is opgewonde van Afrikaans leer. (Just tried one preposition without knowing if it works)

Then I'm not going to bomb you with links. :) I suppose you have already come across a few sites that teach the basics of Afrikaans, since you wrote that you were restarting your study.
How far did you get with Afrikaans? You could search for more serious stuff on the net, type in Gugli Colloquial Afrikaans or the one from the Teach yourself-series for materials.

I did already, all you mentioned :)
I have a downloaded Afrikánsz-Magyar szótár on my home laptop. I've never used it though, I want a book in my hands, if there's no internet-pal, which would be the most fun :)
After Swedish and English I understand quite a few words and grammar, I've never really got into the language yet. You seem to be quite active on Afrikaans, how far did you get? :)

Well, if you had used all the materials aforementioned, then I can't adivise you anything else just get through them again. You know I find it pretty hard to put my written Afrikaans in practice, obviously Unilang seems to be a good place to use it, but we have a shortage of native speakers. Of course you still can partake in other Afrikaans-based forum on the net, if you are on a pretty good level.

I hear you mate, when you say you want a book in your hands. I hate reading books on computer, it simply kills my eyes if I do it for hours. For Afrikaans materials is the net the only choice in my opinion. I remember seeing TY Afrikaans in bookshop specialised in foreign books for 60 ezer Ft or something, that almost gives a price of a language-course with native speaker. Not to mention you can grab the whole stuff from the www for nothing. :)

On my level of Afrikaans: well, I'm studying neerlandistiek, so it gives me a good reading skill in Afrikaans. With my current Dutch knowledge I can understand almost the same ammount of words in Afrikaans, of course I read about the grammatical differences of the two languages. After all I consider myself a beginner.
