In Munster Irish, this would change the stress on the word so I'm more conscious of it. (Imagine someone saying /vəmˈpair/ instead of /ˈvæmpair/.) In Connacht the difference would be less noticeable and in Ulster not at all (from what little I understand of Ulster pronunciation).

Yeah, if I remember correctly Munster stress is based on long vowels rather then syllables.

Don't know where you got that word, but it's not any of the dictionaries I have. Only thing like it I found was in Dwelly's: caol-abhainn, which simply means "narrow/slender river/stream". The only word I've see used for pencil has been be "peansail."
