Movie/book quotes translation

Postby Sarmad » 2012-03-14, 21:04

Hi! I'd love it if any of you guys could translate a few quotes for me into Latin. I love the sound of Latin but unfortunately don't speak it (yet) so can't do it myself. Please!

1) His judgement cometh, and that right soon.

2) Tall ships and tall kings;
Three times three.
What bought they from the foundered land?
Over the flowing sea?
Seven stars and seven stones;
And one white tree.

[In case you're not familiar with the story of Númenor, "foundered" means drowned here.]

3) You cannot pass!

Thanks to anyone who attempts to translate. :)

The first line was popularised by the Shawshank Redemption, of course. The second one is probably my favourite piece from Tolkien's books, so I'd love to have that in Latin! And the third one is from the LOTR movies.

Please correct my mistakes in all languages, even if I claim to have some proficiency in them.

I'll try for the fun of it, but it could probably be improved by others... Especially regarding vocabulary and word order.

1) Iūdicātiō Ēius veniet, et hoc iam mox.

2) Celsae nāvēs et celsī rēgēs;
Ter trīni.
Quid submersā de terrā ferunt?
Per fluens mare?
Septem stellās septemque lapidēs;
Et ūnum arborem album.

3) Meāre nequis!
(IIRC he actually says Thou shalt not pass! though I might be confusing it with the book. That would translate as Nōn meābis!)

Thanks, Babelfish! :P I love how they've come out, particularly the White Tree piece.

And it was my mistake! He does indeed say "You shall not pass" in the movies, not "You cannot pass".

Arrrgh! Arborī in Hebraicā linguā masculīnae considerātae* suētus sum...

* Coniugatiōne quādam verbī "esse" ūtī praeferam (i.e. I'm used to "tree" being masculine in Hebrew), sed tālibus in sententiīs "esse" omittitur.

Obiter: Quod ad vocabulum arboris pertinet, etiam in lingua Theodisca et lingua Iudaica illa stirps masculini est generis: der Baum, דער בוים.
