'Sonia' is an Indian name coming from 'सोना'. What I meant is that its interesting that this name exists in Hindi and Russian, from two completely different sources. :o

( sanskrit? punjabi? another language? )

It comes from 'सोना' meaning 'gold', which in turn comes from the Sanskrit 'सुवर्ण', meaning the same thing (literally 'good tint'). I'm not sure if it has an equivalent in Punjabi, although I'm pretty sure it is used in Punjabi too. I found it interesting that it is not related to the Russian 'Соня'. :hmm:

with ण ? :hmm: maybe from punjabi word सोहणा [soṇā] "beautiful"...?
In Russian "соня" as common noun 1.dormouse ( animal ); 2.sleepy-head,drowsy-head ( about a man/a woman ) ; as proper name - derivative from the name Софья ( Sophia,Sophie)

I think Sona/soniya litteraly means golden. It is used to describe a person whos beautiful, but the actual meaning in goden. However I'm not a native speaker so I might be wrong on this :P

In any case ډېر تشکر :)

I have a short question

I know the word जंगली can mean wild, but can it also be used to describe uncivilized people? I was wondering because I watching a tv show yesterday and an "upperclass" city girl was calling everyone from the villages, "junglee's".

Sasuraal is my other favourite, I have a habit of picking a serial and watching it until it ends so if a new one starts afterward I don't have time to watch it, I have nothing against Pratigya though lol :)

1) What is the pronunciation of मुंह (mun.h)? The Shabdkosh recording didn't even sound particularly Hindi to me. Is it just "m" and then a nasal "u" (like in tum but nasal)?

And then what's the Urdu way to write it? منہ؟

2)

(hey god, if it's all the same to you, wanna trade my life
for my daughter's?)

"Bacana" means "to save" according to my dictionary, so do "bacana" and "baca dena" have the same meaning then?

Yes, bacana and baca dena mean about the same thing. When you use dena with a verb it: "suggests that the benefit of an action flows away from the doer"(as my TY Hindi book says). This is opposed to lena where it flows towards the doer. So baca dena has basically the same meaning, but with that extra sort of "feel" attached to it.

Hmm I don't know how to decribe it without a recording. It's kind of like moonH. Here is it in a song:

My Urdu dictionary says its spelled like :منہ.

Hope this helps a little.

Kaun sa urdu shabdkosh istamal karti hai?

Mera bahut poorana hai to... main alag shabdkosh chahiye :P

Aur prashna: matlab ka "mitti men mila diya" kya hai? Milna = to meet, find; mitti = earth, dust, dead body; diya = gave.

Kamine, tune hamari ijjat ko mitti me mila diya.
Haramzado, Gabbar ka naam mitti main mila diya...

Matlab hai?:

Kamine, you killed/ruined my honour
Bastard, you've destroyed the name Gabbar

Lekin mujhe construction "mila diya" abhi bhi samajh nahin aya...

With regards to yon hi or yunhi depending on your pronounciation, I personally use it to mean "just, just like that" sort of like you'd use the word bas. An example.

Why are you learning Urdu?
Bas, yunhi.

Hope that made sense.

I am an American from Fremont and have no idea about Hindi/Urdu. But I know some Indian families who send their children for learning Hindi through some Jano India/Hindi programs conducted by US Hindi Association. Previously I hardly ever heard them speaking Hindi but now if they have to gossip they use Hindi in front of people like me who don't know Hindi. Sometimes it make me feel bad, but on a second thought it is a nice way to learn. The kids around often use to call me "Gora", I need to know what that exactly means.

hahaha gora isn't exactly a bad word, just means white. when we use it it's like hey look at those white people or ha ha ha this white guy can't handle spicy food. if we call them something bad, it's usually a legit cuss word or something.

you should learn hindi, man! the script is so damn easy to learn, it's like a weeks work. then you have goof balls like me who are all to eager to help you learn the language!
