About the dialects, I've been a few times in Euskal Herria, and as I've seen, even being the dialects very different among themselves, they are perfectly understable each other, between different native basque speakers. By the other hand, some dialects yet become too hard for non-natives and batua students. The biggest differences among dialects are between Biscaian(in Spain, the most western one) and Zuberera(in France, the most eastern one).

Anyway, since I'm not basque myself, I'm not the most indicated for discussing about these matters :wink:

Check this site: http://www.landarbaso.miarroba.com you'll find a lot of information about dialectal basque. In the "dialectos comparados" page there is the auxiliary verb put in all the dialects.

Kaixo!

Well, i think this is the best place to ask - where can I most effectively learn Euskara on-line? I understand some of you speak Basque, so is there a course on this forum perhaps?

I'm willing to learn thoroughly, from scratch, though...
I think I can follow any course in English or Castellano...

Appreciate any help!

Well I am not a good teacher but if you really want I can open a course. There is a really good course I lately found , but it's in French.

Well if you really don't have anything else to do, sure, why not open a course?
I'd be 100% dedicated, that's for sure.

I figure you're still a better language methodist, so I suppose you know what kind of a course a TOTAL beginner needs. I'll not go overestimating my knowledge...

As I said before, whatever course language suits me as long as its English, Castellano, Portuguese, even German...
but ENG or CAS would be appropriate, I reckon...

too bad 'que je ne parle pas Français', though :)

Zoroa, if you start the course, l will also take it then. But l don't want to become a fluent speaker, l just want to have some knowledge, you know, to understand how the Basque language works. Just as Vedran, l'm also a complete beginner and the course language won't be a serious problem either (though l think it should be in english, of course)

Nik ikastaroa hartuko dut ere bai, azkenean badago.
I also will follow the course, if it's finally done.

Anyway, for those that are interested on beginning with euskara, there is a downloadable course, but it's in spanish: http://www.geocities.com/aprendereuskera/index.html It's not very exhaustive, and somewhat informal, but it's very easy to follow, perfect for beginners.

letter ñ

When we were talking about languages that use the Latin alphabet without any diacritics, Basque was one of the candidates to this title. Later, I realized that, according to most descriptions, the letter ñ belongs to the Basque alphabet as well. But when I watched Wikipedia and newspapers in Basque, I only noticed ñ in words which seemed to be proper names.

So, what about ñ - is it really used in the Basque language, or does it only occur in foreign words? Could you please tell me more about it?

Zoroa, what about the course in French you mentioned? What's the URL?
Learning Georgian, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Papiamentu from scratch. Trying to brush up my Norwegian up to an advanced level.

Sorry guys, I am currently working, so I cannot write long things (I do it during break times) but :

Fenek : Basque orthography changed a lot with time. My grand pa has a grammar of 1920 (Northern Basque) and some of the nouns have th, dh and now they are written with t and d (there is no English like h sounds in United Basque, only in Northern dialects).

As for ñ, its is mainly used for diminutives and a few words. Northern Basque tend not to write it (they write ni instead) but it is widely used in the Southern countries and officially present in the Academy's alphabet.

One of the best course in French for Basque is written by a real estate company...

Egun on, nere izena Brazilian dude da. Brasilen bizi naiz. 24 urte ditut eta irakaslea naiz. Euskaraz pixka bat badakit eta norbaitekin praktikatu nahi nuke. Ez naiz zergatik, ale euskara oso interesgarria iruditzen zait. Egon bat irakurri dut euskara munduko hizkuntza zailena dela, baina ez dakit egia den. Norbaitek euskarazko link interesgarririk al ezagutzen du? Agur!
