turnout

Postby Raufoss » 2011-05-16, 7:27

Det var en god idea Aleco! :y:

Jeg ønsker å skrive "turnout" eller noe lignende på norsk i følgende setning?

I hope there is a good turnout for our 17th of May breakfast.

Mitt forsøk:

Jeg håper at det er en god valgdeltakelse for vår 17. mai frokost.

Siden ordet har "valg" i det, jeg tenker at dette har å gjøre med "election turnout" og at jeg må bruke et annet ord eller uttrykk.

Tresmak

Postby Raufoss » 2011-05-18, 20:50

I'm not familiar with the Norwegian compound word "tresmak" and am guessing that one possible translation for it might be "three flavors."

Tresmak: Wood flavour. (Although it doesn't really imply that something tastes like wood, only that it was similiar to what you would think wood tastes like)

Could "tresmak" also be used to mean "three flavors"" If not, how would you write "three flavors of icecream" på norsk?

"du hadde helt rett/riktig", Raufoss :) Three flavors would be something like "tre (forskjellige) smaker".

Tusen takk! Was I correct about "trefliser" being the Norwegian translation for "wood chips?"

Yes, you were :yep: Although I've actually never heard anyone refer to it as anything but "fliser".

And some trivia: when you get a wood chip in your finger or somewhere on your body, you will say "jeg har fått flis (i handa / foten / benet / tåa ...)"

So I guess adding "tre" is just being redundant.

We call that a "sliver" in English.

Aleco: "Oppmerksomhet, spillere"? Høres virkelig, virkelig snodig ut.

Forøvrig, bruker vi "treflis", når man har fått flis i fingeren, og av en eller annen grunn, også innimellom når man f.eks. fyller vegger med greiene som isolasjon. Ikke det at det finnes noen ANNEN type flis i det hele tatt.

Jeg sendte en melding takker den norske studenten som inviterte meg til en 17. mai fest og fikk dette svaret fra henne:

I sent a message thanking the Norwegian student who invited me to a 17th of May party and received this reply from her:

Bare hyggelig! Veldig glad du koste deg. Du får videreføre tradisjonen!

I've heard "bare hyggelig" used a lot as a reply to "tusen takk," but I'm not sure how to translate "du koste deg."

I'm not quite about the last sentence either. Does it mean that I need to continue on with the tradition and host a similar party in the future?

Å kose seg = å hygge seg = to have a great time :)

If you say "[subject] får [verb]", it means that "you will (just) have to" or "you can" :)
Du får videreføre tradisjonen = You can continue with the tradition (since you like it so much).

Takk for hjelpen Aleco! :y:

One of the Norwegian students I met on the 17th of May is in Las Vegas this weekend and he posted the following message on Facebook:

"Åh du milde... Vegas baby!!!"

What would be a possible English translation for "Åh du milde..."?

Det er vel egentlig vanligere å skrive "å, du milde" :hmm: Men uansett så er det kort for "du milde måne" (you mild moon!) - but I don't know why we say that :P It's a phrase that basically means "oh, my!"
