I had wondered if it had audio. Thanks for clearing that up. Is it a good textbook? How is it set up?

The other textbook I linked to should come with audio. If not I have the audio, so if you end up getting it and don't get the audio let me know. :)

They also have the Eastern Armenian for the English Speaking World textbook (among others) here.

Hope that helps.

Much of my family is Armenian, and we often make a traditional bread called "katah." But we pronounce the k as [g] and not a /k/. Does anyone know why this would be? My family would be presumably Western Armenian speakers as they are from Istanbul if this makes any sense.

There's a small playlist of Armenian hip hop (!), r'n'b, pop and instrumental music that I made for myself. I have to say, I've pleasantly surprised by their hip hop, as it's my favourite style.

Natives?

Postby Svet » 2011-01-14, 15:28

I am subscribed to two other sub-forums, and there are a lot of locals. I haven't seen anyone here, so just wanted to ask - are there any Natives or are we alone by ourselves?

What you described is typical of the phonological differences between Western and Eastern Armenian. If I recall correctly, Eastern Armenian has more or less preserved the phonology of Classical Armenian (grabar), whereas Western is more divergent, with some voiced consonants becoming devoiced and unvoiced consonants becoming voiced, etc. Classical/Eastern կ is [k] but realized as [g] in Western Armenian, so it would make sense that if "katah" is the Eastern name for that bread, it would be called "gatah" or something in Western.
Please correct my mistakes in any language.

I'm a native speaker of Spanish, but I was listening to this song and then when she started singing in Spanish I was thinking "hey...these words resemble Spanish a lot. I could make a "missheard lyrics" hahaha. Then I realised "Oh, it's actually Spanish.."
I wasn't expecting that.

Armenian dictionaries

Postby Barbapapa249 » 2011-02-22, 8:13

Hi all,

I was wondering whether anybody knows of a good dictionary Armenian-English / English-Armenian. I need it for linguistic research, so I'm not looking for a beginner's phrasebook.

At the very least I want it to have an indication of the grammatical class of a morpheme, i.e. for items like 'down' and 'under' it should say 'preposition' and for items like 'eat' and 'walk' it should say 'verb', etc. etc.

There is the one by Mardiros Koushakdjian and Rev. Dicran Khantrouni (1997) in my institution's library, but this dictionary doesn't feature grammatical analysis for Armenian and thus is useless for me.

Can anybody help me out? A reference would be okay, I can try to then find it on Ebay or in a library somewhere close to me. If you know of any elaborate on-line dictionaries which feature such grammatical analysis I would be happy to hear from you as well!

Thanks a lot!
Anne
