Bengali Lesson 3: This lesson is going to have phareses and basic grammar. I tried to orginally do it in the Bengali script but I do not know the keyboard yet, so Im going to translitterate it.

In Bengali (বাংলা) it is extreamly imporant to indentfy the difference between things that are near and far. ( Just like in Pashto ) I dont think Hindi/Urdu has it to this extent.

For Example:
Eta-this(here)
Ota-that (there)
seta-that (wherever else)

*In Bengali, when you make an s sound, most of the it goes along with a very light "sh" sound.

egulo-these(here)
ogulo-those (there)
segulo-those(wherever else)

Here are Some Personal Pronouns in Bengali:
Ami- I Amra-We
tumi-you(Familar/singular) tomra-you
apni-you(Polite/plural) apnara-you

*The rest as mentioned before requires to regconigize the differences between-here, there and wherever else*

*I know it seems very hard at first, but you will get used to it. just note all polites are plural and you really want to make a distinaction as not to offend anyone. Also to learn better try making flashcards. This is what helps me the most*

Aapnar/Tomar naam ki?-Whats your name?
Aamar naam....-my name is...
Haan nischoy - Yes, of course.
kemon acchen?-How are you?
ami bhalo acchi -I'm fine.
bujhte pari ni - I don't understand.

In this lesson we will learn how to make Possessive Pronouns in Bengali. It is fairly easy and as long as you know the Pronouns, you should no problem with possessive.
1.Amar-my amader-our
2.Tomar-your (familiar) tomader-your(you/plural)
apni-your(polite) apnader-your (plural/polite)
3. er-his/her (familiar/here) eder-their
enar-his/her (polite/here) enader-their
4.or-his/her(familiar/there) order-their
5.onar-his/her(polite/there) onader-their
6.tar-his/her(familiar/elsewhere) tader-their
Some sentances to go along with the lesson:
Amar rumal niin-Take my handkerchief
ini amar ma-she is my mother
uni raniarbaba?- is he rani's father?
uni ki? -who's this?

Also, I was talking to one of my Bengali friends the other day, and I think nomoshkar is the Indian Bengali greeting, while in Bangladesh, one would say slamalikum.

Bengali Lesson 5
Hello everyone, so we already learned the possives and the pronouns. Now its time to learn the verb, "to" in the present tense and the past tense. I was going to add how to form the negative in this lesson too, but I have decided to leave it out, so it won't overwhelm, it will be in the next lesson.


Present Tense "to be"

1.Ami achi-I am
2.Tumi acho-you are (familar)
3.se ache-s/he is
4.Apni/Tini acchen- (tini is plural you are for familar and apni is polite you are)

Examples:
baba ki bari acchen? (Is father at home?)
Uni kothay acchen? (where is she/he?)
okhane amar kolom ache(my pen is there)


Past Tense "to be"
1.Ami Chillam-I was
2.Tumi Chile-you were
3.se chilo-s/he was
4.apni/tini chilen- you were (see above for explanation)

Examples:
Okhane onek lok chilo-there were lots of people there.
Ami bhalo chillam-i was good

Hey Meera! I have two questions about the alphabet. First, are all the ones with an h in it mean that they're aspirated? Also, what's the difference between শ and ষ ? You marked them both as making the sound "sho".

yep its like in Hindi script its aspirated. শ this sho is more like sssshoo like the s sound we make in "shh" they both have shhh but that when is thicker sounded.

Negative "to be"
ami noi- I'm not

se noy-he/she isn't
apni/tini non- You are not

Examples:
Ami hindu noi-I am not Hindu
tini ki hindu noy?-Isn't he Hindu?
majhi roana hote raji holona- The boatman didnt want to set out.
Ami bangla bujhina-I dont understand Bengali.

Also did anyone noticed that majority of famous singers from India are of Bengali orgin? For example Shreya Ghoshal, R.D Burman, Kishore Kumar, kumar sannu, abhijeet, and shaan! their all Bengali

I found some Bengali movies by Satyajit Ray with English subtitles on youtube. Satyajit was once thought of one of the top ten directors of all time and was the only Indian to appear on that list All of his films are in bengali, and as "rumor" has it he was the orginal writer of ET but he died before he got to publish it. And suppsosdly Steven Speilberg is a big fan of Rays movies. Not sure how true all of this is though.
