Ah... I don't know Russian. So I have to put up with textbooks in Chinese and English. There are very few... :( Are there are lot of Uyghur textbooks in Russian?

zhiguli wrote:Here's what it has to say about vowel reduction:

5. Reduction of narrow vowels /у/ (u), /ү/(ü), /и/ (i).
At the very beginning of a word before voiceless consonants narrow vowels practically lose their length and sonorance (?), when pronouncing them all that comes out is a puff of air:
У (u), ү (ü), и (i) before к (k), т (t), х (x), ч (ç), ш (ş), с (s), п (p), қ (q) are almost not pronounced - икки (ikki) /шки (şki)/, ишт (işt) /шт (şt)/, ука (uka) /фка (fka)/, үч (üç) /ш (ş)/, иппәк (ippək) /шпәк (şpək)/.
Narrow vowels undergo the same changes between two voiceless consonants in monosyllabic words:
Чиш (çiş) - чш (çş), миқ (miq) /мқ (mq)/, қуш (quş) /қш (qş)/, хиш (xiş) /хш (xş)/.

About i:

2. Vowel и (i) short, high, narrow. It can be very short, almost not pronounced between a sonorant (м m, н n, р r, л l, й y) and a voiceless consonant, and also between two voiceless consonants: тил (til) /тл (tl)/, пил (pil) /пл (pl)/, ис (is) /с (s)/, хиш (xiş) /хш (xş)/, чиш (çiş) /чш (çş)/, тит (tit) /тт (tt)/, тик /тк (tk)/.

Another song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNFIH2NlfVA
you can hear it very clearly in the title, "yaşisun", which sounds more like yaşsun.

Oh I've noticed this as well!! In fact the textbook I'm using, 'A Basic Course of Uyghur' (in Chinese) marks compulsory vowel devoicing, including the examples like ikki and işçan. The vowels aren't lost. You can still hear the 'shape' of the vowel with a puff of air.

I like the song! :D Too add an example, there's çüşkən (at about 1:50) -> çşkən.

It's the only one I'm aware of. There are dictionaries and more academic-type stuff, but nothing of the "teach yourself" variety. On the other hand there is quite a bit for Uzbek.

It wouldn't be this one by any chance?

No it's not. It's a new one published in 2006. This one.

Thank you for the link to the text book. I'm really enjoying it! In fact, it is the reason why I've decided to start studying Uyghur more seriously. :) I can tell pronunciation will be the toughest part of this language for me, though.

Here's a link to some Xinjiang podcasts that can be downloaded:
http://compound-eye.org/rogc/xinjiang/x ... fts-mixes/

They are mostly Uyghur music, but I believe a bit of music from other central Asian countries has slipped in. I really enjoy them!

I have decided I really like this language :) But, in an attempt to stay sane, I won't be taking learning it very seriously.

On another note, I like this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHQRzezUVrk

hi linguanima,

About song "Dawançıņ qızı", where can I find the mp3?
I'm really curious about that song. I already heard a version with only first two verses from your given lyrics above, but never heard heard the full version.

Also, I would like to know the english translation too.

Thanks in advance.

Cesare, actually it's a little wrong.

مەن

You use wrong letter for “e".

I recently got interest in Uyghur!

I have some books for it in Chinese, English and Japanese.

If you want to type in Uyghur you may use this website:
http://www.lexilogos.com/clavier/uyghur.htm

Uyghur, unlike Arabic uses Arabic script as an alphabet, not like Abjad, which Arabic originally is.
All vowels are written.

Also the sukun is used to tell apart o from u.

You have to use it, unlike in Arabic

بو - bo

بۇ - bu

If you first letter is a vowel, you have to write hamza first:

ئۇ - u (he, she, it)

ƣ - interesting fact, Latin ortography for Uyghur used to employ this character for the letter "gh"

It's a very specific sound, you have to listen to it, if you want to learn to pronunce it.

What I have learned:

ماۋۇ قەلەم. اۋۇ قەلەم ەمەس. ب ۇ قەلەم مۇ؟
بۇ دەپتەر

this is a pen
that is not a pen

is it a pen?

This is a notebook.

I hope I didn't make many mistakes.

Thanks so much for your spelling corrections モモンガ, I actually know now that I made that mistake, but before, when I wrote that post, I wasn't all sure how to spell in Uyghur properly, so thanks for correcting. ;)

For people who know Turkish, Uyghur is easy to understand in written form. But it becomes hard to understand speeches, and for speaking you have to make practice too.

It looks like it still keeps some features of the old Turkic language. For example in Turkey Turkish, the word bolmak has become olmak, yapgan has become yapan etc but in Uyghur they are still the same.

And their Arabic alphabet is really a nice attempt to adapt the Arabic alphabet to languages with different wovel usages. The usage of letter waw with different markings still seems to be an overloading of that letter though, maybe in the future that shape diverges into 2 or 3 different shapes. Because I think one of the main problems of Arabic script is letters look like each other a lot.

Wow, this is so cool! I know I'm 6 years behind, but oh well :-p

Does anybody anywhere have the lyrics to the song that was posted "Gul Dasta" and any information about the girls singing and where the video is filmed? I would REALLY love the lyrics and a translation if possible!
