Looking for the spelling of two words

Postby mithridates » 2009-08-06, 13:46

Hi, I just watched the new G.I. Joe movie and there were two Gaelic words there. I've written a post on the words in the movie but have no idea what the proper orthography for the words is.

Here's what they sound like:

shoot/fire - takhin (kh = guttural ch like in loch)
eject - karma or kirma

Recognize those words? I'm not having any luck finding them in any online dictionaries.

Thanks in advance.

the second one is probably cur a-mach, but can you give us an audio clip of them?

I would love to but there's no audio available yet - I don't even think the movie is out in North America yet (saw it in Korea today). Two people said the first word and both times it sounded like takhin/tachin. I tried looking up the words for fire, shoot, throw, etc. but nothing. Cur a-mach was only said once so I was less sure about that one, but in the meantime I'll assume that to be the spelling.

Apparently so - someone just wrote below the post that the first word is Teine, which is pronounced completely differently and sounds like 'chenneh'.

he meant that it was pronounced completely differently to how it was in the film, not from how it is spelt

True, but Quevenois' point is well taken. I should have said pronounced completely differently from what an English speaker would expect.

I've yet to find a positive review of the movie in a Scottish paper. Still looking.. :para:
