Wondering how various languages express this idiom

"eating for two" is an expression to suggest someone's pregnant because she supposedly has to eat enough food for her baby as well, which isn't medically true, but oh well I'm surprised you haven't heard this expression.

For Sjal, about 80% is a priori, 10% Finnish- or Estonian-based, and 10% Swedish- or English- or French-based. To come up with the 80%, I started in 2003 with a really horrible conlang called Shael which has been serving as a Proto-Sjal since 2005 roughly, which I've applied sound changes to over the years. I try to derive as many words as I can from the proto-language and words created since, but sometimes I do what I did to come up with those words in the beginning: I sit there trying to make sounds that sound like the thing to me. For some vivid words like "sun" ("keil" geel -> gël -> keil) was easy to come up with and has always stuck aside from the sound/spelling changes. For words harder to picture like "law" (kylö), it takes longer before I find a word I like and keep.
And the grammar is a whole 'nother story

How many words do you have for in Sjal? I started a conlang today, but creating words seems to be the hardest/longest part. :/

There are programs that do that for you? I guess the answer would be yes then, one by one, often mulling over some words for days before deciding on them

Yes, but of the 2 I know, one doesn't accept diacritics and the other repeats words a lot. :/ Check the resource sticky thread in the conlang forum. Also check my previous post, I editted it.

Note that 'edestä' is a common expression that basically means "for" or "to the amount of" or "worth of". The literal meaning ("from in front of") is not consciously noticed.

In French, jai tellement faim car je mange pour deux doesn't make much sense because, even though women say that they eat for two when pregnant, it's no obvious here that a pregnant woman is speaking. Isn't it the same in English?
As for me, I would add en ce moment (at this time)

I'm not nitpicking! J'ai très faim car je mange pour deux sounds weird, as if you' had inverted the clauses (je mange pour deux parce que j'ai très faim...) What about adding a conjunction: Je mange pour deux, mais c'est parce que je suis enceinte?
Of course, if you see the woman, there's not problem!

Since I have experience with pregnant women, it is NOT true that women have to eat double, however, they MUST consume more vitamins and minerals. You almost double your caloric intake when you breast feed however. My wife only gained 30 lbs each pregnancy. I'm always reminded of this song though

+ Estonian, Võro. Just as Varislintu noted above for Finnish, the Estonian expression "eest" (and "iist" in Võro) is simply a postposition meaning "for." It's etymological meaning of "from in front of" is not consciously noticed, similar to "edestä" in Finnish. It is just the standard way (or, one of the standard ways) to say "for".
