Quick Question. I heard a claim that Abkhaz is the hardest language on earth ot learn (uh-huh) and that it's verbs have about 1,000,000 forms. Is that even remotely true? 1,000,000 seems far too many for any language unless you manage to have 10+ moods, voices, tenses, person/numbers, half a dozen aspects for all and conjugate for objects, indirect object, and every other word within three sentences. Nonetheless, can anyone give a ball park forgure to the number of verbal morphemes?

I can't answer this question but the million figure sounds like just a bit of an exaggeration.
In any case, if you can get several thousand forms out of a Georgian verb then it shouldn't be much trouble to get a few thousand more out of an Abkhaz one.
Abkhaz, like Georgian, has pluripersonality (up to four persons -
и-сы-з-и-лы-рҩит
it-me-_-him-she-[causative]-write-[past/finite marker]
"she made him write it for me")
but unlike Georgian it has verbs with double subjects (сцоит "i went" but - сиццеит "i went with him" дсыццеит "he went with me" дрыццеит he went with them etc).
and also incorporates interrogative, negative, mood and other particles/words, sometimes with more than 10 morphemes appearing in a single form. Some more examples:

и-сы-з-л-ы-м-ҭе-ит i was not able to give it to her (а-ҭа-ра "to give")
и-ш-ҧа-сы-з-лы-шьа-м-ҵа-р-и? how will i not be able to put it on her feet? (а-шьа "foot")

No, it's Hewitt's grammar in a .zip archive. I've just downloaded and opened it. Are you sure you clicked on the download link and not something else?

and the second one only has grammar resources in georgian...

No, it has also georgian grammar in abkhaz :)

Since I already uploaded this for someone else I thought I'd post it here as well. If you've ever wondered what pop music sounds like in Abkhaz..some songs by Хибла Мукба:
mukba.rar (file will be deleted)
Some clips from youtube:
Иҭынчроуп иахьа
Аҕба

I got these lyrics to one of the songs from this Turkish diaspora site. Translation is mine, from the Turkish:

AH
Mother

Ахаҳә инахьылшьуеит лнапы...оо илашауеит,
Her hand caresses the gravestone, it shines
Ан игәаҟуа, иҭахаз лҧа ибжьы:
The grieving mother hears her fallen son's voice:
“Оо баангыл, сан блаҕырӡ аанқыл.
Stop, mother, stop your tears
Ҧхыӡла избоит, бгәаҟрақәа збоит.
In my soul I can see, I know you're grieving

Еиҭаҳәара (refrain):
Бымшәан! бымгәырҩан, иҭам ҳәа сыҧсы.
Don't be afraid, don't grieve as though I'm dead
Ихадоу дыр, сыҟоуп, избанзар; иҟоуп Аҧсны.
Know that it's not true, because I'm alive; Abkhazia lives.
Бхәыцуа бымтәан, бымгәырҩан, иҭам ҳәа сыҧсы
Don't sit lost in thought, don't grieve, as though I'm dead
Сыҟоуп саргьы наӡаӡа, избанзар; иҟоуп Аҧсны.
I too will live forever, because Abkhazia lives.

Ахаҳә хьшәашәа илзынхаз лгәыдылқлеит..оо илаҳауооит
The cold gravestone, the son's request embraces (?). She hears
Лҧа игәеисыбжь; еиҳа-еиҳа...иҕәҕәахоут.
Her son's heartbeat: eiha-eiha...She gets up.
“Оо баангыл, сан; блаҕырӡ аанқыл.
Oh, mother, stop, stop your tears
Ҧхыӡла избоит, бгәаҟрақәа збоит.
I can see in my soul, I know that you're hurting

(Еиҭаҳәара)

Бхәыцуа бымтәан, Бымгәырҩан, иҭам ҳәа сыҧсы.
Don't sit lost in thought, don't grieve as though I'm dead
Сыҟоуп сара наӡаӡа, избанзар; иҟоуп Аҧсынра.
I too will live forever, because Abkhazia lives.

(Еиҭаҳәара)

There's also a Turkish facebook group that posts Abkhazian songs (and sometimes lyrics):

And yes, even rap music has made it to Abkhazia:

Some more songs:

In other news, George Hewitt is writing a self-tutor for Abkhaz, hopefully it will be better than his Georgian learner's grammar.
The Era Abkhazia website has been posting clips from the opposition Abaza TV, including the weekly Abkhaz-language program Амчыбжь агәеисыбжь (There are also a few clips of it on youtube.) Some of the newspapers in the media section also have articles in Abkhaz.

This goes to show that I should have never drifted away from the site! That is awesome news (maybe to good to believe, not that I'm calling you a liar zhiguli, just in shock)
I suppose there's no release date yet . . ?
Anyway, good to be back. Hopefully for a while this time too . . .

Great, now I only need to get the $90! Thanks for the link! (and I second the 'hopefully it's better then Hewitt's Georgian grammar' though as well. Though the second addition of Hewitt's Georgian grammar looks ok . . . )

Well I 'took the plunge' so to speak, and bought the text. I put the order through today in fact, so after I get it I'll let you guys (anyone that's interested) know how 'good' it is (not that I'm a professional linguist/reviewer or know much Abkhaz, but I think I can give a general idea of whether the textbook is good or not  )

Yes, I suppose I should tell how the book is. After all, I did promise that awhile ago.

I was honestly hoping for something along the lines of Hewitt's Georgian Learners Grammar (meaning something conversationally based, with vocabulary and grammar notes and such, as a standard language textbook). That's not quite what you get, but it is close.

The textbook (in my mind) resembles Aronson's Georgian: A Reading Grammar, only don't expect to get a bunch of vocab. The lessons focus on the written language (from what I can tell), but they don't give vocab like most language books. Oddly enough there's not even a glossary at the end of the book. But the vocabulary is laid out in at least the early lessons so that you can tell what word means what.

The grammar explanations can be a bit over the top, with linguistic jargon, but then again Abkhaz is a complex language anyway. The non-linguist can still understand what's going on though.

Granted these are just my impressions of the book, as I haven't started learning Abkhaz yet, but I have looked through the book. Overall I think the book is good, but it could have been more conversationally based.

I have gone through the whole book and studied the first chapters in a great detail. It is a typical Hewitt book — full of jargon, nerdy details (like the spelling ‘coöperation’ throughout the book), and it’s hardly any conversational, but still, it is the only book in any language listing complete conjugations, discussing in detail the different ways to count in Abkhaz, etc. In terms of explaining morphology it’s a must. Combined with other materials, such as Самоучитель абхазского языка by Джонуа and Киут and the Abkhaz–Georgian phrasebook, I find this textbook very useful and I’m starting to feel more and more self-confident about my practical Abkhaz skills. :D

Learning Georgian, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Papiamentu from scratch. Trying to brush up my Norwegian up to an advanced level.
