Even though I'm only beginning to learn this language, and there are few links and even fewer great links for this language, I figured I'd start a thread for the Macedonian language. Macedonian is a South-Slavic language, similar to other Slavic languages like Serbian, and Bulgarian.

As I said there are very few links for this language, but I did manage to find a set of lessones here. It is only a set of six lessons, but it should make you want more!

I'm personally using the book 'Macedonian: A Course for Beginning and Intermdiate Students' by Krammer to learn this language. You can buy it here if your interested.

If it helps, here are a couple of links I posted earlier in another topic (this one)

About grammar

http://www.seelrc.org:8080/grammar/pdf/ ... donian.pdf <- a pretty extensive grammar, too bad it's in the latin alphabet. I know you've asked for basic stuff, but you can find lots of things here.
http://mk.wikipedia.org/wiki/Граматика_на_македонскиот_јазик <- this is basic, but it's in macedonian (I can understand it 8)). However it can be usefull.

Concerning phrasebooks the last time I googled I could hardly find anything, only this:

http://www.ehs.org.mk/DOCS/technicalinfo.doc
http://www.unet.com.mk/best/summer05/su ... guide.html (Scroll down to 'FREQUENTLY USED MACEDONIAN WORDS')
http://www.unet.com.mk/best/summer05/do ... 005_v2.pdf (a bit more phrases here than in the html page)

Out of these, the SEELRC grammar is perhaps the most useful for you, since you already have Krammer's course (which is excellent ;))

Good luck in learning Macedonian. :)

Russian will help less, but both Serbian and Bulgarian help a lot. They're all members of the South Slavic language continuum, Bulgarian and Macedonian are considered the same language by some, but this can devolve quickly into politics, just like many other dialect vs. language issues.

Could anyone translate this beautiful song. I speak croatian and understand a lot but it would be nice to have a translation.

I've read somewhere that Macedonian is often considered a dialect of Bulgarian. However my Macedonian friend says she understands more Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian than Bulgarian.

Well, Macedonian IS a Bulgarian dialect, though it's undergone some Serbian influence.

They lived in the same country for a while where Serbo-Croatian was a dominating language, so maybe she was exposed to it more or even studied it at school.

You mean you want to learn the S L A V O- MACEDONIAN language, the official language of that small country, north of Greece, with about 2 million inhabitants (20% of which are albanians) & that wants
to slavo-macedonize the northern province of Greece & its capital Thessaloniki ( with only 2,5 millions Greeks who live there ) also called Macedonia, which is a geographic term...If they love us so despertly, why don't they become Greeks???
:hmm: / :?: / :para: ?????? I just ask myself....

Slavomacedonian is a western bulgarian dialekt whith many serbo-croat forms, since the time of Yugoslavia. To your information, the slavic population of that republik (F.Y.R.O.M) used to call themselfs BUGARI before and during the 2. wolrd war...
I' ve met also people from there who insisted they couldn't understand bulgarian...they just try to differentiate themselfs from our neighbors, their brother nation Bulgaria...naz / karagyozlik yapiyorlar.

Take it easy man, no need to get all excited about it. This being a language site everyone pretty much knows that Macedonian is a Slavic language related to Bulgarian and Serbian, and not related to ancient Macedonian spoken in Alexanders Macedonia. So they took the country name from there, yeah, and Russians name their country after some Scandinavian tribes, and Ecuadorians name theirs after a geographic term even though Ecuador doesn't cover the entire belt of this Earth. So what? :silly:

Hey guys, I'm really interested in learning this language, and I would like to start, but I'm currently learning 3 languages and don't want to start another until I'm fluent in 1 or 2 of those. However, I found a good Macedonian-English/German/Albanian/French/Italian/Greek dictionary, and it seems to be pretty good, because it only goes between those languages and Macedonian, so it's not a crappy multilingual dictionary. :P

If anyone is interested in it, here is the link.

Me? Dunno, I want to learn a Slavic language, and all the other ones are pretty hard (with the exception of Bulgarian, since it's almost the same language as Macedonian. :P). I heard about Macedonian a few weeks ago, read about it on Wikipedia, and fell in love with it. :D

Haha, Bulgarian - an easy language? OK, we don't have any cases but what would you say about our tenses?

Anyway. I've just found an interesting course in Macedonian and I find it pretty useful.
