I'll post all my questions about Korean in this thread, so that I won't pollute the forum with random little rookie questions.

1. Are ㅓand ㅗ always pronounced the same? I read on some pronunciation guide that ㅓ sounds like 'e', but to me it just sounds like 'o'.

2. About '둘', I think it should be pronounced like 'dul', but I often hear it pronounced like 'tul'.
Which is the correct pronunciation?

1. The most approximate sound of ㅓ is 'e' as you find it in Hanyu Pinyin. Or somewhat like 'e' as in '-er' in English. Many foreigners find it hard to distinguish ㅓ and ㅗ.

2. The initial consonant often becomes aspirated. It is indeed pronounced like 'tul', but it is probably better to stick to /d/ until you can distinguish 둘 from 툴. The difference between these two 'tul's may appear too subtle, but they do dinstinguish them.

I think ㅓis pronounced with rounded lips, like the 'ar' in 'large' (BrE, London pronunciation ) or the Persian long 'a'. It's a more open 'o' whereas ㅗ is /o/ in IPA and sounds like the French 'eau'.

Doesn't 'd' sound like the unaspirated 't' in Italian/Spanish.. whatever and 't' the aspirated? That's my feeling though...

To me, the lips are more relaxed when pronouncing ㅓ, as in American English "Bob'. Is that right?

Yeah that's the East Asian way... Don't know why such clumsy method is used in transcription.

Note that 工夫 is not KUNG FU.

I found 工夫, but I mistakened it with 功夫|KungFu。 That's why I felt weird.
So, the Koreans think study is painstaking and time-consuming. I see.

I haven't been here for a long time.
Just to say hi. And...I'm taking Korean 101.01 this quarter, for absolute beginners. So far they're teaching stuffs I already know. I hope the course can get harder.

BTW, one of my instructor 오인애, whose name written in Hanja is '吴仁爱'. But in Mandarin, it is pronounced the same with '无人爱' (loved by no one'). She hates her Chinese name.

Yep, some of my classmates says that it's like cheating, since I already know most of the Chinese words.
