I think this thread is long overdue! I often find myself learning new vocabulary from listening to songs, not just in Hindi/Urdu, but any language! I thought this thread would be a good place where we can share songs and if we are unsure of some words or sentences in the lyrics we can post them here and help each other out. I'll start off:

Rahim Shah - Ghanam Rangi

The title is a mix of Pakhto and Urdu: Ghanam is a Pakhto word meaning 'wheat' and the song is referring to a girl who is a 'ghanam rang wali'; or a girl which has a wheaty skin colour

In my humble opinion, "O Duniya ke rakwale" is by far one of the best songs of Bollywood, and Rafi's voice is outstanding!

There's an American hip-hop song that samples "Chandi ka Badan" (React by Erick Sermon) - the funniest thing is that it samples the line that goes "if a person has a penchant to commit suicide, what can one do?" and then Erick Sermon replies "whatever she said, then I'm that." Maybe he should learn Hindi!

When the guy says "teri soniye," it's subtitled as "my beautiful one." Is "soniye" related to "soni," and if so, what's the difference exactly? And what does "teri soniye" literally mean-- "your beauty" ?

Sorry for my total beginner questions! I haven't formally studied Urdu but I would like to start after I acquire a good textbook. For now, I just listen to a lot of Hindi/Urdu music.

I think that when masculine adjectives end in "-i" the femine is done with "-iya". "Mera soni" vs "Meri soniya"... but not sure, let's wait sb with more knowledge replies this .Plus, I think i've heard this "soniya" word in some Punjabi Bhangra song...

That song seems mostly Punjabi to me, peppered with some Urdu words and bits here and there (like 'baat' instead of 'gal, 'mujh ko' instead of 'menu' ect.)

'Soniye' is the feminine vocative form of the Punjabi adjective 'Soni' (masculine is 'Sona'), which roughly translates to 'beautiful' (the masculine vocative would be 'Soneya'). However in the song, the subtitles are not very literal; the phrase 'teri soniye' would literally translate to 'your (female) beautiful/beloved', but this isn't what is being sung:

Tere qurban jawan,
Teri marzi jaan jawan,
To har baat maan jawan, teri soniye

I've bolded the possessives here and italicized what they refer to in the same rhythm they appear in the song: If I could come to be your qurban, if I could come to know your desires (what you want), then I'd accept your every word, oh (my) beautiful/beloved.

So 'soniye' is used on its own without a possessive, but since it is used in the vocative, when someone says it you should assume the possessive 'my' with it.

Aja Re, Aa Zara: I like this song! Kind of sexy in the non-sleazy way that only the old films could do

Nearly ren! With adjectives like this, where you can change to a masculine and feminine form by adding an -a or an -i, the masculine state, which is 'sona', tends to what people think of as the 'normal state'. So what you said, 'Mera soni' is half way there, you just need to remember to get the them to 'rhyme', so if the possessive is masculine 'mera', the adjective will shift to the masculine form too, 'sona'.

Unfortunately, you can't use this phrase on its own! It needs to be used to describe something that is beautiful, for example 'mera sona ghar' (my beautiful house) or 'meri soni ghari' (my beautiful watch).

Regarding how to form 'soneya' / 'soniye', don't worry about it, I think it is irregular and it is not used at all in every day Hindi since it is a Punjabi word, the only reason I know how to form it is because my parents listen to a lot of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

When I was watching the video, although I thought it was Hindi being spoken, certainly it has a clear Punjabi flavour (i.e: lots of guys wearing coloured turbans in the background). So that's why I remembered I had heard that word in a Bhagra song.

What does "qurban" mean?
