ÞÝÐINGAR / TRANSLATIONS

Postby Egein » 2007-09-27, 17:20

Þessi þráður er ætlaður þeim sem vilja biðja um þýðingar bæði frá ensku og íslensku. Vinsamlegast ekki opna nýja þræði annars staðar. Þeim þráðum verður eytt, eða ef okkur finnast þeir athyglisverðir (muhaha) þá getum við alltaf flutt þá hingað inn.
Takk fyrir.

This thread is entended for those who want to ask about translations both from English and Icelandic. Please do not open new threads elsewhere. These will be deleted or moved if the moderators (Almar and I?) find them interesting (muhaha).
Thank you.

Ég hugsaði um að gera þráður fyrir þetta í sænskuforumið, en síðan valdi ég að ekki gera það, af því að ef nokkur ætla að sjá ef spurningin sín nú þegar er spurð - þá er það auðveldari ef maður ekki á að leita í gegnum tráð með fleru blöðum, en í staðinn bara þráðar með efnanafnum.

Took me forever to write this..and it probably sucks too >.>

Looks a bit like it's written by a Mainland Scandinavian.
But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright Brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.

Which is hardly surprising, now is it? ;)

Scandinavian tends to be the language I lean back on when writing Icelandic (as opposed to, say, Italian, where my French is more useful).

I was not being sarcastic, I know how much you love the Icelandic language and I thought it would be a pleasure for you, that´s it.

You sure are an aggressive person.

Why not? You'd be perfect as it's main star!

I'm sorry if I misunderstood you but after the comments you had about my on the other forum I figured you were being sarcastic. I do love Icelandic, though :P

I corrected certain things and left others uncorrected because I felt I wasn't fit (it's late here and I was under the influence of alcohol a few hours ago) for it.
So anyone, dig in.

* or "hvort það hafi þegar verið að spurja spurninguna sína" but this sounds funny.

Reply to all-help with Icelandic slang

Postby Mavericker » 2007-10-16, 3:02

Hello. I'm interested in and am doing research on Icelandic youth, street and college slang.

I'd like to know:

What are some Icelandic slangs for

"cool guy" besides "svalur gaur" and "toeffari"?

and

"cool girl" besides "pæja"?

A cool guy and a cool girl are someone whose likeable, suave, popular and cool under pressure. Please let me know. Thank you. :D

Translation please (One line of Icelandic into English)

Postby JohnnyD » 2007-11-05, 12:05

Egein(and anyone else who runs the forum) – sorry, I realise I'm posting this all over the place. I'm trying to put this into the translation 'sticky' like you say, but it keeps going up in the wrong place. I promise I'm not doing this on purpose. Anyway...

Can anyone translate the following phrase into English for me please?

Suifnokkuinn minn er fullur af alum

Many thanks for your help!

Sorry, that sentence doesn't make any sense to me. Looks like it's full of typos or a constructed language.

If it isn’t Icelandic, it might be made up words of various languages. Let’s see …

Suif is French for “tallow”, a substance used to make candles. Nokku looks like Finnish, but I don’t know what it’s Finnish for. However, nokka means “bill” (as in the beak of a bird) or “snout”.

So, putting these together …

My tallow snout is full of aluminium?

found the answer to my own question.

it's taken from a monty python sketch parodying badly translated phrasebooks. apparently it's supposed to mean 'my hovercraft is full of eels'

In that case it should probably be
"svifnökkvinn minn er fullur af álum"

The Owl and the Pussy-cat - to be translated into Icelandic

Postby pimpoapo » 2008-04-01, 14:53

Hi,

I'm looking for a translation of the Owl and the Pussy-cat by Edward Lear on behalf of my friend who is making a collection of this poem in as many languages as he can, just for fun. He's 97-year-old and this hobby gives him a great pleasure.

The Owl and the Pussy-cat

I

The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
'O lovely Pussy! O Pussy my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!'

II

Pussy said to the Owl, 'You elegant fowl!
How charmingly sweet you sing!
O let us be married! too long we have tarried:
But what shall we do for a ring?'
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the Bong-tree grows
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood
With a ring at the end of his nose,
His nose,
His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.

III

'Dear pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?' Said the Piggy, 'I will.'
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon,
The moon,
The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon.

He started about a year ago and we managed to get it in more than 40 languages so far. Because we are running out of resources I decided to ask help from communities who dedicated to different languages.
It doesn't need to be a professional translation.

Here's a website that I started to set up to share all the translations that we've got so far. Some of them was made by poets but most of them just by friends or people who we run into in different places (waiters of the local restaurant, nurses from hospital, etc). They did the best they could and they just did it for fun and because they wanted to add their own language to this collection.

http://pimpoapo.itrello.com/bompa/

The site is under construction, at the moment just a flash version available.

Here is the list of the languages that we've got so far (01/04/2008):

Afrikaans, Basque, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Esperanto, Estonian, Finnish, French, Frisian, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Irish Gaelic, Korean, Kyrgyz, Latin, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Malagasy, Norvegian Bokmål, Norwegian Nynorsk, Polish, Portuguese, Portuguese (Brazilian), Romanian, Russian, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog (Pilipino), Thai, Turkish, Welsh

If you could translate it into Icelandic that would be a great help for us.
For exchange I always mention who did the translation at the end of the poem and if you wish it can be linked to your website or email address.

Thanks again for anyone who will help us.

A collaboration between me and Gunna - here you go, hope it's helpful! :)
