Songs that touch you, move you.

Postby Strigo » 2007-09-19, 19:57

I wanted to share this song with you, which touches me deeply. Besides, it is sung by the most beautiful, strong and astonishing voice in the world, Mercedes Sosa's.

Are there songs which make you feel like this?

I agree with you about Sosa's voice: it is very astounding.

In a different, more ...adrenaline-pumping genre, Higher and Higher by Craig Wedren has definitely had some effect on me. I can't explain it, but it makes me happy in a Carpe-Diem sort of way

A lot of African and Afro-Caribbean or Latin American popular music elicits the same 'Carpe Diem' feeling sometimes. (e.g., Talisman by Ngouma Lokito).

I have recently been introduced to Central Asian folk music, and while I don't know it very well, it is stirring and exotic (esp. throat singing, which vaguely reminds me of black metal vocals). Here's a Tuvan song called Orphan's Lament. I hear morin huur in there, but still can't figure out what kind of keyboard that is...maybe a harmonium.

I hate Baroque architecture, but I love the music. Here's the Toccata from L'Orfeo by Claude Monteverdi.

Heavy metal produces one of two feelings in me, either an ecstatic berserkergang-like state (e.g., anything by Amon Amarth or Cannibal Corpse) or a sombre, sepulchral feeling (e.g., Dunkelheit, my favorite Burzum song). Sometimes in between, as is usually the case with Týr.

I'm going to say All Apologies and Smiles, Yours Truly, Ugly Valentine by Carissa's Wierd, because it's easily the best damn song I've ever heard, and everything about it is very moving.

Hmm, we're starting to get into quite a large array of music tastes for our anthems :).

That song from Sosa is quite good. You can hear the soul in the voice, that's not an easy feat.

My personal song is VnV Nation's Vox: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DK0LYOq2iGI . It just strikes a cord with me. When I get down or disillusioned, this is guaranteed to rally my spirits, not with rage or hate, but a 'clear understanding', for lack of better words. It feels like I can see beyond the dissapointment, the pain to come and the sacrifices made in vein, to be defiant and come out of my problem with a roar that I'm proud of.

There's an English version of Mercedes' Sosa song: http://youtube.com/watch?v=PCHmGDeqd8c

Wikipedia wrote:'Outlandish' is a multi-award winning hip-hop group based in Denmark. Formed in 1997, they consist of Isam Bachiri Azouaoui (born in Denmark and of Moroccan background), Waqas Ali Qadri (born in Denmark and of Pakistani background), and Lenny Martinez (from Honduras). All three members are devoutly religious and deeply open-minded, with Isam and Waqas being Muslims, and Lenny being Catholic.

The Orphans Lament... 8)
Love that one.

The song Jäljen by Tenhi...beautiful melody, beautiful singer...it sends shivers through me and makes me remember good times.

And Little Girl Blue, Louis Armstrong version. It fills me with an overwhelming feeling of love as it was sent to me once by someone VERY close who said he thought of me whenever he heard the song.

Thanks Hanu for finding it for me *loves*

I så fall brukar jag lyssna på 'Fuck the Universe' av Kraft eller likanade sånger. Iaf kommer jag bara att dö.

In such situations I usually listen to 'Fuck the Universe' by Kraft or like material. I'm only going to die anyway.

The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows, by Brand New. They are from Long Island and are just so awesome.

Anyways, this song is about problems in a relationship, that while they can be very small and easily worked out, are ignored until things accumulate and a rift occurs...

It isn't exactly ecstatic, but it is true and very real, and hopeful, I think.

Then there is my Darkest Hour, by Scary Kids Scaring Kids...it just rocks. My friends and I reenact the video one a biweekly basis.

Lastly, that I shall bother you with, is Just A Taste, which just reminds me of how much it sucks when you are in a fight with a friend or somebody back stabbed you.

I always think it of it as how people can always drop you without giving a second guess.

Mercedes Sosa has a nice strong voice.
I wish I could find a good example of Tenhi's vocals.

I get the same feelings from Viking Metal - specifically Bathory, which has a very ... I can't even explain the emotion with words.

Remember to Feel Real, by Armor For Sleep. I love this song, especially to play in front of people. I am seeing them in concert in November, yessss.

Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades, also by Brand New. So...great. It makes me so...hm. To me, I get a lot more out of songs by performing them than listening, and I love singing this one.

For me, pop music almost never does it.

Stravinski's Firebird Suite and some of Eric Whitacre's choral pieces really touch me, however. There's also The Album Leaf.

Sigur Ros' Hoppipolla always brings a tear to my eye (both for the music itself and some memories I have attached to it). I really like the fact that this epic peice of music is about the guys girlfriend jumping in puddles!
The British Isles are awesome - I know, I live there - but Ireland is not a part of them. K thnx bai!

I made a video just now of another Tenhi song..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ti7AGjvGcn0 Vilja.

I used my mother's account and some photos, not a good video but the song is the point.

And Danse Macabre by Saint Saëns, I heard it the first time on the 1931 version of Dracula; I'd bought a DVD if a photo montage at the end

Bathory is nice, especially A Fine Day to Die...
Opeth also gives me nice feelings, nostalgic.

Damn, there are so many songs, I couldn't pick just a few. Here are a couple from the same artist (椎名林檎).
