I just realized that the original text had 'the second' instead of 'the other'; I had it mixed up with a black metal song by Melechesh, whose lyrics are based on the same. "No door can shut them out, no bolt can turn them back"

But proceed anyway.

In Finnish, “the other” and “the second” are both toinenso it makes no difference which one it is in Finnish. :nope:

By the way, in my Finnish translation I have boldly used the comitative case
(avoimine suineen)! I wonder what Varislintu and Stacy are going to have say about that. :notme:

I think it's good. :yep: The only ambiguity is if it's the dragon or its mouth which can't be measured, which is also the same for the English too..

The only foolproof way is: Toinen on lohikäärme, jonka suu on auki, ja jota kukaan ei voi mitata. buuut that doesn't sound as good as what you already wrote and it's splitting hairs IMO :yep:

Most probably the dragon, I reckon, by syntactic analysis of the sentence. If it were the mouth, the sentence would be: “The other is a dragon, whose mouth that none can measure is opened.” :hmm:

Changing German to make the dragon unmeasurable instead of the mouth...

English: The other is a dragon, whose mouth is opened, that none can measure.

There's no ambiguity!
What do you think punctuation is used for?
Just compare (I separate the relative clause with slashes):

The second one is a dragon /whose mouth is opened/ that none can measure.

The second one is a dragon /whose opened mouth none can measure/.

Oh, in my Indonesian translation, the mouth is the immeasurable one. :?

@Gruszka:
der Drachen = the kite
der Drache = the dragon
;-)

@others:
In the German translation, it should be "Drache" instead of "Drachen".

Corrected German and added minor Portuguese variants.

-----

English: The other is a dragon, whose mouth is opened, that none can measure.

Estonian: Teine on lohe, avatud suuga, mida keegi ei suuda mõõta.

Hmm there's ambiguity in the Finnish but in the English it puts me off because it's messed up word order..as if there were too many things to put in the sentence and the author just couldn't be bothered to start a separate sentence :D "mouth" was the last thing mentioned so as I read it quickly while checking for ambiguity I connected it to measuring..

I rewrote it that way because I wanted it to fit on the line. The original text reads:

The second is a dragon, whose mouth is opened...
That none can measure.

which offers little, if any clarification. The ellipses may mean that some text was unintelligible.

Personally, I think that the immeasurability applies to the mouth, and gives an awesome description of a dragon not unlike Ancalagon (or 'Rushing Jaws') the Black.

I’d chosen to make the dragon unmeasurable in Portuguese as well, because the English gloss had also made me confused. :P
