inuktitut is the proper name of the language. inuit is the ethnonym (plural for inuk "man")

We named it Inuit/Kalaallisut precisely because we're not sure what to call it We were waiting for an expert (hopefully an angry inuit) to come and enlighten us. As far as I knew, Western Greenlandic (Kalaallisut) was the standard?

Eeeeh, folks. I was talking about Greenlandic (Standard Western Greenlandic, Kalaallisut), nothing else. I'm learning it, and Stacy wants to learn it, and maybe some other people as well, so that's why she went and asked for a Greenlandic (= Kalaallisut) forum to be opened.

The name "inuit" is strongly misleading.

If you are learning Canadian or Alascan Inuktitut / Yupik languages, they should be discussed in other forums. They belong to one family, but they are all diferent languages.

I think Greenlandic is also the only of these languages which is written in Latin alphabet, the others use something like the Cree script, as far as I know.

I wouldn't recommend using the word "Eskimo". It's not a polite word for them since it means "red meat eater". Inuit would be misleading since it's a name of a language family, not a language itself.

I have heard that it wa a legend, and that eskimo would mean "speaker of a foreign language" although its origin remains blurry.

As far as I know the origin of the word is not clear. It is still used as the general name for the language family: Eskimo-Aleut.
It is not used anymore as a name for the various Arctic peoples.

Indeed Zhiguli! The requirements are that someone has to know the language as a native speaker or can teach it, or something like that. Otherwise a thread in the other place for links to resources is fine.

I don't think it has been a bad idea. Even if no one teaches it, it can still be a place where sources will be given etc (OK, there's the wiki for that) and discussion over the language takes place. Later who knows, maybe a native appears. See the Scottish Gaelic or Papiamentu fora. The guys who started them were not natives, they taught the basics and later natives appeared. There was a lady whose nick was ilaana who was fluent in Greenlandic but she has disappeared because when she was here no one wanted to learn it. Perhaps you can convince her to return.

Now we have resources, those who are serious about it can do the research and discuss Greenlandic, and ask the people who have resources different from us on matters that need clearing up.

I never thought I'd hear a Unilanger complain about a bloody language forum, Jeez.. You don't HAVE to visit it!

no harm, but look at armenian or kurdish, or nahuatl (etc etc) to see how things usually turn out. i really do hope this forum succeeds and proves me wrong, but there's plenty of examples that only prove the rule.

How many supporters did you have for it? We have about 6 learners and resources. The Armenian thread was dead last time I looked at it.

i could argue this on more than a few points...
as for why i'm "complaining"...i have requested forums repeatedly...and been sent to the "all other languages" un-forum, for all the reasons mentioned above and more. and i'm fine with that, *as long as the same rules apply to everyone else*. so what's with the queue jumping here? or is it just a matter of having the right connections?

No, I don't have the right connections. I've never spoken to Car before asking for the forum, so there's no need to accuse me of that.

Since a number of people requested Greenlandic and we do have resources and the possiblity of getting the native speaker back, what' the problem?

If you want the Nahuatl and Armenian threads, then just ask more
