In Norwegian: "Vokt Dem for hunden", which is more or less verbatim Cave Canem, is the proverbial expression. This is somewhat archaic language, though. Current messages to this effect come in two flavors:
- "Hunden biter!" (The dog bites)
- "Her vokter jeg" (I am watching over this place) accompanied by a picture of a dog.

[quote="Ron de Leeuw, Cave Canem"]Hello Everybody,

I think everybody knows "Cave Canem" is Latin for, "beware of the dog". I'm pretty curious, how you say, "beware of the dog" in other languages! Can you help me with creating a huge list?

Japanese:
犬に注意 inu ni chuui
猛犬につき注意 mouken ni tusuki chuui (mouken=fierce dog)
猛犬注意 mouken chuui

We usually use the last one, 猛犬注意.

Varúð, hundur (hundar = dogs) this is how it would be said on a warning sign
or to use a longer version: Passið ykkur á hundinum (beware of the dog)

Nearly a year since the last post on this subject... so I thought it was a good time to incorporate the various versions given here into my website (already mentioned in the sixth message of the thread), with a slightly altered URL: http://www.ozaru.freeserve.co.uk/bewareofthedog.htm

If you spot any errors or omissions etc. please let me know -- and if you feel like a challenge, click through to the "polyglot wombats" page. :-)

Let me first tell you that I think your page is wonderful! My nick is Cave Canem and having translations of it in many languages is really nice of course.

There's one mistake. You've placed the sign 'Vokt Dem for hunden' behind the other Dutch sign, while it's actually Norwegian.

Keep up the good work :D

Ron.
