This is the Abkhaz thread. Obviously this is for discussing and learning Abkhaz. I can't say that at this time I'll be a great help for right now, as I will probibly be working on the similar Chechen thread, but I just thought I'd start the process, and of course I'll help anyway I can, only wish there were some native speakers here at Unilang!

Well...somehow I don't think anybody will care for this language. Then again, some people's language learning choices are determined by the weirdness factor. If you want weird (not to mention mind-bendingly difficult), then surely this is as weird as it gets.
Just look at this alphabet. (And isn't it funny how all their words begin with "A"?)
This one (Bzyp dialect) is even longer...
Still want to continue with this language? Yeah?
And how bout some Abkhazian music?

Well, I found all the recently created forums for 'other languages' very interesting for me. Indeed, I am interested in discussing some aspects of these languages (and cultures), even if I am not going to learn them. So, I thank you księżycowy and zhiguli for the links and material you already provided and for the future discussions.

Is Abkhaz an ergative language? I often read the Abkhaz and northwest Caucasian languages may be related to northeast Caucasian languages, and (more rarely) Kartvelian languages. What do you know/think about this?

Abkhaz. Seems like an interesting language. But for such a small language there are still some nice resources out there. More than for georgian. :shock:

Pitty that the lessons on the site are not complete yet. And how do you advance in Abkhazian? Are there newssites or anything else out there?

apsni.com has been hacked[/url]...so that pretty much nixes that option for now. I know don't about progressing, I've never met anyone who's semi-seriously studied the language, let alone gotten to an advanced level.

*-қәа is the plural marker, and only used when addressing more than one person.
*шә is the 2nd person plural affix, у the 2nd person singular masculine, and б the 2nd person singular feminine. Unlike Georgian, Abkhazian does not use the 2nd person plural as a polite singular.

How to make "honey cake" in Abkhazian:

АЦХАМГЬАЛ

Алых: ашыла гуӡа -- х-ҵәыцак, ачашыла -- 100-150 [шәкы-шәи ҩынҩажәижәаба] г., ацха -- 70-80 [хынҩажәи жәаба-ҧшьынҩажәа] г., аӡы -- 1,5 ҵәыца [ҵәыцаки бжаки], аџьыкхыш -- гьамала.

Ашылеи ачашылеи ааилыршәшәаны, иааргуаҩаны ацха налауҭәоит. Иара уа маҷк иҵаау аӡыҧха алаҭәаны, икуаҳатәуп. Амажәа ампахьшьы нақуршәны ихҩаны 2-3 [ҩба-хҧа] сааҭ аҧхарраҿ иааныжьтәуп. Адырган ахуша ланшьыланы, иара ланҵаны иуӡуеит. Ишыҧхоу, ахарҵәы иаццәыругар ҟалоит.

THE-HONEY-CAKE

Ingredient: flour fine -- three-glass-one, the-bread-flour -- 100-150 g[rams], the-honey -- 70-80 g., the-water -- 1.5 glass, white-granulated-salt -- by-taste.
