Thanks for the vocabulary list, but I have a question... As far as I know, Lakota contains plosives with glottal or velar aspiration and ejectives, which are indicated by the graphemes "ph/th/kh...", "pĥ, tĥ, kĥ..." and "p' t' k' ...", but I can't see none of these letter combinations in your vocabulary list...

Do you teach a variety of Lakota that does not have these sounds or have you just left them out in order not to confuse us?

The Lakhota language has been written in many different spelling systems - my dictionary uses an older, more accesible system which doesn't differentiate between k and kh or p and ph. A "Standard Lakota Orthography" is being developed which has those distinctions, though.

I was wondering if you had heard of the Lakota Language Forum. It is a forum dedicated to learning the Lakota language, and it uses the new standardized spelling system. I cannot stress enough the importance of this - the ability to differentiate such words as tȟóka, tȟoká and tókȟa is a major factor in making the language easier to learn. Don't be scared off by the funny-looking letters!

You need to buy the New Lakota Dictionary to join the LLF, which is easily available from Amazon - it is a huge improvement on Buechel's dictionary (is that the one you have, Nero?), which contains many errors, both in the grammar and in the lexical entries, some of which are not even recognized by contemporary native speakers. The NLD also contains a very detailed grammar section, explaining absolutely everything about the language in simple terms.

I noticed something else too; someone wrote that Lakota, Dakota and Nakoda are dialects of a single language - this is incorrect! Lakota and Dakota are dialects, but the languages spoken by the Assiniboine and Stoney tribes are completely different languages.

I have the new dictionary, and thus what I posted here is very clear to me is incorrect. As the above post mentions, I would HIGHLY suggest the new dictionary. It is worth the money for the grammar section alone. It is so simple to understand, and provides it -- to me at least -- in a fun way.

And I'm Dyslexica and pretty stupid.
