Tēnā koe Tāne Ariki,

I've decided that I'm going to take my attempts in learning te reo Māori up a notch. I'm going to look for 1) a comprehensive Māori language course book, and 2) a comprehensive Māori grammar book. I'd like for the books to be as advanced as possible. What would you suggest I get?

Tēnā koe e hoa,

You should think of getting -

H W. Williams 'A Dictionary of the Maori Language of New Zealand'

and

Let's Learn Māori by Bruce Biggs (this will take you from beginner to intermediate).

You could also get -

The Reed Reference Grammar of Māori, Auckland, Reed Publishing, 1997 (it's a very big hefty yellow book. It was written by Winifred Bauer. It goes from Beginner to Advanced but does not cover proverbs or sayings).

I will post more books later that will help to 'whakanikonikongia tō reo'.

http://www.korero.maori.nz/

Good if you want to start learning conversational Māori!

http://www.maori.org.nz/cgi-bin/quizzes/quiztest.cgi/

Also good if you're a beginner :)

http://www.waatea603am.co.nz/WaateaNews.aspx

For the advanced fluent speakers, good to listen to, and good to try your translating skills from Māori in to English

http://tvnz.co.nz/view/tvone_story_skin ... ormat=html

Likewise with the above except you can watch whole episodes of the news in te reo Māori :)

Riki I found this here:

http://www.thm.ac.nz/resources/curriculum/Te%20Reo%20Maori%20Curriculum.pdf

It's a 112 page pamphlet made for classroom teachers of the language (the first 35 pages aren't very helpful) but there is some good information in it. There's a summary of some grammar topics at the end, page 98 I think.

Kauderwelsch just released a Maori book and audio CD - or at least I only just noticed. I ordered it and will start studying Maori!

I'm counting on your support.

Feel free to write anything you like in te reo Māori. I will only correct when specifically asked to.

I have extended the "US International" Windows keyboard so that you can type macrons without much effort. Please download the keyboard from http://www.learnlangs.com/usIntExt.zip and run the setup. After that, you should have the option of switching to a "Maori" keyboard instead of the usual English one. While that keyboard is activated, you can type macrons by first typing a dash - and then the vowel (lower- or uppercase) that you need. You can also type Esperanto chapelliteroj by using the ^ key and then C, G, H, J, S or W (for U). And of course you still have the ability to type French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and German diacritics, as with the regular US International keyboard. Only disadvantage is that if you want to type a dash, you will either have to use the minus key or dash key plus space. I hope somebody will find this helpful!

Junesun, I think I'm in love! I've been trying to find a workaround for Esperanto and Hawaiian!

I was talking to my māori speaking buddy today about taking up māori, after all it is our national language and SOME comprehension could help to some level. Anywho, she recommended this link:

http://podcasts.tewhanake.maori.nz/inde ... ,0,42,html

which I see isn't on this thread yet. Its a series of podcasts.

Kia ora everybody! A friend of mine sent me a link to this enormous list of Māori resources: http://community.livejournal.com/lingua ... 58626.html , even if it's on LiveJournal. I just wanted to send some help to our cousins, the Māori learners. :)

I'm surprised no one has suggested Māori Television yet. If you hover over the "Shows" menu there is a section for "Language" :) As far as I'm aware, you don't have to reside in New Zealand to watch these :)

I remember finding a set of Maori lessons a few months a go, but I'll be damned if I can remember where I found them now.
They were a few pdfs with audio that was freely downloadable. The lessons where only about a few pages, and mainly focused on conversational Maori. They seemed like they might be aimed at teens, but they still looked quite good, wish I could find it again. :?
