The above is quite old, but I was reminded of it because I just misparsed peenramaad as peen+ramaad (presumed to be: "fine/delicate/elegant ramada") rather than peenra+maad which it was meant to be. Never mind that *ramaad isn't even an Estonian word and so therefore neither can peenramaad be one. And never mind that it should have been in its partitive form (*ramaadi) in the context I found it if it were an actual word.
I was ready to happily add the alleged Spanish loanword *ramaad to my Estonian vocabulary and I nearly didn't catch my error, because it was simply mentioned offhand as being behind someone's house where a few kitchen herbs and vegetables were grown, so either meaning made sense - an elegant ramada or a garden plot. It was only the "why is it in the nominative form?" question that made me realize it couldn't be ramaad. (Not that a varjualune would be the best place for growing vegetables in Estonia either, but I was envisioning this ramaad to be some sort of strange greenhouse. A very fine one, too! Perhaps with a roof made of glass?) :rotfl:

peenramaa allotment, plot for a garden
(okstest) varjualune ramada
lenks handbar
koloniaalkauplus a store which sold coffee, tea, spices, rice, etc (items primarily produced in former tropical colonies, but also sold other food items as well; old name for a grocery store)

I came across these words which were apparently coined by Edgar Kant in the 1920s or so. They aren't actually used in modern Estonian (all references to them that I could find online explain what most of them mean or, if the meaning is obvious, mention that they were newly-coined or not widely used, with the expectation that the reader won't be familiar with them, even in articles from the 1920s); they didn't really catch on, but I thought they were rather fun words, so I'll post them here. Some sound a bit like joke-words to me, but they were genuinely used in publications in the 1920's and 30's with, apparently, the expectation that they would enter the lexicon à la Johannes Aavik.

siruk rectangular house
tömbik house that is taller than it is wide
lambik house that is wider than it is tall
tömpruudik square house that is taller than it is wide
lampruudik square house that is wider than it is tall
lambikulogusk poor, falling-apart house that is wider than it is tall
kahasmaja house divided into two apartments
mestimaja house divided into two to four apartments
laumik house divided into four to eight apartments
üürimestik rental house divided into two to four apartments
üürilaumik rental house divided into four to eight apartments
kaksiktubik two-room apartment
eriskaksiktubik two-room apartment consisting of a living room and bedroom
sumbkaksiktubik two-room apartment consisting of two bedrooms
kolmtubik three-room apartment
vastlinn newly-developed section of a city
linnakehis city center of a large city
jugulinn city of between 2000 and 5000 residents
tarulinn city of between 5000 and 20,000 residents

From this you can infer the possibilities of other fun compound words like lampruudikulogusk (poor, falling-down square house that is wider than it is tall), vastjugulinn (newly-developed city of 2000-5000 residents), sirukuüürilaumik (rectangular rental house divided into four to eight apartments) and so on.

I would translate rubber band as "kummipael" (although "kummipael" doesn't necessarily have to form a loop). When someone says "kummirõngas" then the first thing that comes to mind is something thick, something shaped like a torus (either made of solid rubber or hollow). I think "kummirõngas" could often also refer to "ujumisrõngas".

Suur aitäh! You know, that actually makes more sense for kummirõngas given the context. Something large, like the size of a rubber tire. EKSS doesn't give a definition (so much for being "seletav!"), but it does give an example that makes your mention of ujumisrõngas quite clear: Ujuma õppija kasutas abivahendina täispuhutavat kummirõngast. And Saagpaak's dictionary says "rubber ring". So yeah, if I'd looked any of those places I would have gotten it, but... for some reason I searched in the online Estonian-English dictionaries and at least two of them unfortunately say "rubber band!" Filosoft and IBS. :noclue: :silly:

Kus sa sellist sõna nägid? Ja mida see üldse tähendada võiks?

Ainus sarnane sõna, mida tean, on "(Püha) Kolmainsus" (Holy Trinity). Ja seegi tundub kunstlikult tekitatud olevat.

Linguaphile wrote:arvutipark computer lab; set of computers
