Yay! Interested in an Urdu drama set in New York?
vijayjohn wrote:Okay. I just watched the first minute or so, and I'm already confused. Did the narrator say "ہر تہذیب کا عکس نظر آے گا"?
I also noticed that it sounded a bit like he was saying اش دیس instead of اس دیش.
Then I got lost again around 1:18. Did he say, "کسی کی مجبوری بہتر زندگی تو کسی کی مجبوری ان کے خواب"?
عکس - reflection? (Honestly, before I looked this up just now, I thought this meant 'picture' or something )
مختلف - different (kind of learned this word in Persian, too, but not with this particular meaning)

Right again. In Urdu at least (and I think this is true of spoken Hindi), دیس is generally used and not دیش (hence "desi"!)

Wait, what other meaning did you learn for it?

It can mean both. In Persian it's used for "photograph" and can be used for that in Urdu too, though in the latter I think فوٹو is more common.
vijayjohn wrote:But the funny thing to me is that when he says [ɪs], he sounds to me like he's saying [ɪʃ], so it sounds like he swapped the sibilants and said [ɪʃ d̪es] instead of [ɪs d̪eʃ]! I think that's just because he was using apical [s] for [ɪs], though. Apical [s] is likely to sound like [ʃ] to people who don't have it.

Also what exactly is the exchange around 2:45 where the term comes up? Does this look anywhere close?
