Sure, as long as we can decide what to do with it! Are we doing transcription, picking out unfamiliar vocabulary words, translation, or what?

I’ve alreay been reading Urdu opinion pieces most days, lately att “jeddojehad”, so I could definitely join this.

I guess we should just watch the whole episode, maybe note down some new words. If we’re doing transcription it’ll have to be a short scene cause that’s a lot of work...

Or we could do piece-by-piece transcription. I'm a little worried that watching the whole episode in one shot would take too long...but I may be worrying too much. We could try what you suggested and see how it goes.

I like Saim's idea, let's try to watch an episode and note down vocabulary and questions. Rather than transcribing the whole thing, maybe we could try brief transcriptions of parts we struggled with?

Vijay, you don't have to watch the whole episode at once if that's too much of a time commitment for you. I might not have the time to watch them all at once either. I started watching episode 1 and made it to 22:30.

Episode 1 - 0:00-22:30 vocab
ہٹّا کٹّا haṭṭā kaṭṭā - robust, full-bodied (2:45 "haṭṭī kaṭṭī")

I struggled to get every word of 20:15-22:30 and would love some help transcribing even part of that sequence. For example, I can't tell at all what is said from 20:15-20:25.
-??? kyūN ... ho?
-kab ... kar rahā hūN, phone kar ke ? ... merā xūn chūs liyā

Okay. I just watched the first minute or so, and I'm already confused. Did the narrator say "ہر تہذیب کا عکس نظر آے گا"? I thought I heard عقص or something, but that doesn't seem to be a word.

I also noticed that it sounded a bit like he was saying اش دیس instead of اس دیش. :D

Then I got lost again around 1:18. Did he say, "کسی کی مجبوری بہتر زندگی تو کسی کی مجبوری ان کے خواب"?

I watched up to 9:17 without making sure to take any other notes.

عکس - reflection? (Honestly, before I looked this up just now, I thought this meant 'picture' or something )
مختلف - different (kind of learned this word in Persian, too, but not with this particular meaning)

Exactly! "Every culture will be (seen to be) reflected/represented."

I also noticed that it sounded a bit like he was saying اش دیس instead of اس دیش. :D

Right again. In Urdu at least (and I think this is true of spoken Hindi), دیس is generally used and not دیش (hence "desi"!)

Then I got lost again around 1:18. Did he say, "کسی کی مجبوری بہتر زندگی تو کسی کی مجبوری ان کے خواب"?

Yeah I think so.

عکس - reflection? (Honestly, before I looked this up just now, I thought this meant 'picture' or something )

It can mean both. In Persian it's used for "photograph" and can be used for that in Urdu too, though in the latter I think فوٹو is more common.

Wait, what other meaning did you learn for it?

It's true of most Indo-Aryan languages since the sibilants merged in them and [ʃ] was re-introduced through Persian. But the funny thing to me is that when he says [ɪs], he sounds to me like he's saying [ɪʃ], so it sounds like he swapped the sibilants and said [ɪʃ d̪es] instead of [ɪs d̪eʃ]! :D I think that's just because he was using apical [s] for [ɪs], though. Apical [s] is likely to sound like [ʃ] to people who don't have it.
مختلف - different (kind of learned this word in Persian, too, but not with this particular meaning)

Wait, what other meaning did you learn for it?

'Various'. I know, it's basically the same thing. But still!

It's a word I don't see often enough in either language yet to remember all that well anyway.

This almost goes without saying, but this is true of Punjabi as well. :) I actually learned this word in Punjabi when I still thought the only word for "country" in Urdu is ملک, it took me quite a while to realise دیس exists in Urdu as well.

Oops, sorry I didn't even notice that you'd written اش دیس and was just responding to the des/desh part!

I hear:

-کیا ہے؟ کیوں اتنی کالز کر رہے تھے؟
-یار کب سے (؟) انتظار کر رہا ہوں؟ فون کر کر کے میں تھک گیا ہوں۔ (؟) کاٹ کے میرا خون چوس لیا!

Thanks! They speak so fast here. I can't get the next line the girl says either.

-اچها... ٹھیک ہے ... ٹھیک ہے تو پهر میں یہ چوڑیاں مامی کو دے دیتا ہوں
-ارے! میں تو مذاق کر رہی تھی
-تو عید پر میری لئے especially چوڑیاں لے کے آے ہو right ؟
-زیادہ خوش ہونے کی ضرورت نہیں ہے

The next sentence he says is also really tough to get.

I finished watching the episode. Here are the other parts I couldn't catch:

24:00
تو فوراً خدا کو ...؟

28:20
یہی بتا رہا تھا کہ ہمارے ؟ کے لئے
(?maybe a name)

28:55
اگر آپ کسی ؟؟ کروا کے نوکری پکی کروا دیں

Very basic question: یاد سے (as a command by itself) means "remember/don't forget!", right?

Finished watching episode 2, here are my notes.

The construction کیا کرنا came up twice. I don't remember if I'd learned it before but I understood from the context:
مت لیا کرو - don't accept
تھوڑا سا ذہن کھولا کرو - open your mind a bit
But what's the difference between saying مت لیا کرو and مت لینا or مت لو ?
Answer: مت لیا کرو is stronger, more emphatic, implying "never" as in "don't ever accept!"

At 8:25 I heard what sounded like the girl saying "میں چِلّی جاؤنگی نا" but none of the meanings for چلی seemed to make sense here. Any ideas? (Maybe I'm mishearing it?)

ماموں maternal uncle (nm)
مامی maternal uncle's wife (nf)
ڈانٹ chiding, scolding (nf)
پیسا اڑانا to waste money

I couldn't get some parts:

6:11 the receptionist says "... چھوپ نہیں بس تھوڑا سا " and I couldn't get the next words. Maybe ڈر رہا ہوں ?

There are what sound like a couple of expressions between 6:59-7:12 I was unsure about.

7:35 I couldn't get the beginning of the boy's sentence. "کر رہی ہیں، میں چھوڑ دوں ___ ... "

21:45-25:25 Jamshed is so hard to understand!

26:00-26:05 ??

30:15 بھٹی صاحب سے مل کے تو ...?

Back in episode 1, around 1:42, I can't quite make out what Mrs. Khan's assistant/secretary/whatever is saying. It sounds something like "مسز خسن، دیکھ رہنا ک آپ پورا ایفٹرنون کل بک ہوا ہوا ہے" (Mrs. Khan, dekh rehna k' aap poora afternoon kal book hua hava hai). Or is it "کل بکھوا ہوا ہے" (kal bookhwa hua hai), or is it something else? Neither of those two options I wrote out would make sense because there would have to be a future tense verb to indicate that کل here means 'tomorrow' and not 'yesterday', right?

So what does بھئی mean? Just an informal form of address?

Also what exactly is the exchange around 2:45 where the term comes up? Does this look anywhere close?

ہاں مطلب لیکن لنچ کے وقت تو اپائنٹمنٹس نہیں لینے چاہیے نا؟ اور اگر کھاؤ گی نہیں تو اور ہٹی کٹی اینٹی ہو، کیسے سمبھال ہو گی؟ -
.کھا لوں گی، کوئی مسلہ نہیں ہے -

Also, I'm having trouble figuring out most of the conversation at the diner, so I'm attempting a transcription in the hopes of making sense of it (if both of you really can understand this without any problems, you'll have no problems at all understanding the kinds of movie dialogues I'm familiar with!):

Yeah, but it also communicates irritation/impatience/annoyance. I think of it as vaguely equivalent to Persian دیگه , Armenian էլի , or Turkish ya.

something like this - I must be getting something wrong, and I'm pretty sure جانا is wrong but I can't tell what he actually says.
