Song lyrics from the opera Bogdan Khmelnitsky

Postby wolverine » 2020-01-01, 18:37

Can I be a butthole and ask for a translation if anyone has the free time? This is a piece I really love by a favorite opera singer of mine and I would like to know what he's singing about. I can only pick out a few words. Note, I did ask if it was okay to share this.

Hello, I hope I'm not too late! Here you are the lyrics in English and Ukrainian:

You didn’t tell anything
You preferred to keep silent to others
But won’t you find a word
Even for your friend?

I believed in the sincere heart
In the flaming honest soul
Do I really have to believe now
In the perfidious betrayal?

We walked the same way
Behaved like faithful friends
We put the same saddle
Under our heads in the steppe.

On the ride, in the camp
We shared a piece of bread
The same coat warmed us
We drank from the same cup

I loved you like my son
I loved you like my brother
But you don’t have a word for me now
That execution is around the corner…

It isn’t scary to be killed in battle
But disgrace is laid on everybody
By this shameful death
For betrayal, for an insidious one…

Not like judge, but like father
Like brother’s brother I beg you -
Break your silence!
I beseech, I adjure you!

* * *

P.S. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any text on the internet, so i had to put down what I heard in the video. Don't hesitate to report any mistakes (you know, opera singers do not always sing clearly), better versions of the English translation are also welcome. :)

OMG, thanks so much!!! I really appreciate you going to all that effort.

Also I see you're from Kharkiv. I really want to see Kharkiv, mainly to go to the opera. Other houses have wonderful singers, but oy, there is only one Sergey Kryzhnenko. Big fan of a few other Ukrainian singers too. Can't beat Ukrainian sopranos for huge, pure white voices.

Yes, Kryzhnenko lives here and sings at the local Opera, but, frankly speaking, I never heard of him before...

You may also like this, I guess. :)

Lucky you lol. So jealous. We have an opera house here, and I saw some great performances there...but Sergey's voice has a unique way of pulling at both your soul and adrenal glands. Just a huge brilliant burst of energy. I LOVE him.

My other favorite singer I really want to hear live some day is the dramatic soprano Alla Myshakova, she's awesome. This is half my motivation for learning Ukrainian :D

Thanks for the link, that guy has a beautiful voice. I'll find you one of Alla Myshakova too, hold on

Update: Here she is performing some Tchaikovsky

I can see at least 5 operas at the local opera house in which you have a chance of enjoying both Kryzhnenko and Mishakova, so you definitely have to come here. :)

Have you already started learning Ukrainian?

Yes, but I only speak a tiny bit of Ukrainian. Tried to save up for an opera a few times, but then something broke or my dog needed surgery...starting some new work soon so will have an easier time saving up. So this year's project is basically a) save up and b) improve my Ukrainian language skills

A good thing about Ukraine is that it's cheap for travelling. As to the language, I hope this forum will be of help to you, feel free to consult native speakers here. 8-)

Good to know. Anything else I should know when I make it over for some opera? :)

Hmm... The best thing in Kharkiv is its parks, imho, so if you like parks, you're gonna probably like the city too. There is one just near the Opera house (see from 5:37 and onwards):

The rest (transportation, accomodation, meals, etc.) is pretty standard, I guess.
