It's closer to European Portuguese. East Timor was administered by Portugal up until 1975, so it's not surprising. If you listen to people like Xanana Gusmão, Ximenes Belo or José Ramos-Horta (former presidents and/or Nobel Peace Prize winners) their accent is pretty standard.
