I don't think there's any etymological relation between Mari вий and Estonian viitsima (Finnish viitsiä Votic viittsiä Võro viiśmä) but it's an interesting coincidence! It was Naava's word jaksaa (Estonian jaksama Votic jahsaa) that led me to think of viitsima to begin with, but then I noticed how closely its first syllable matches the Mari word you posted. :D
