How do you see all of those but not Irish being useful for your research goals?

Because I'd expect most scholarly sources on the Bible from Ireland being written in English.

But maybe there are older sources from Ireland that are in Irish and could be interesting for your research!

EDIT: Never mind, then you'd need Old Irish, I guess.

Hmm, I found some online articles in Irish from beo.ie (see all the links from the glossary here) that seem to have to do with the Bible. I'm not sure how interesting they'd be to you, though.

This actually makes me curious what course books are out there for Irish in German. A preliminary search of amazon.de gives some interesting results. Though I'm not sure what variaty of Irish any of them cover. I'd be interested in persuing that, if someone could help me know what type of Irish is in some of them.

I'd love to learn a language or two from German sources. It's great for both languages. I just got two textbooks in German for learning Sorbian (Upper and Lower) after all! (I'm just going to space out Polish and Sorbian. :P )

I have never used any course books in German, so I can't really tell. I think when I looked a few years ago, there weren't that many books to choose from (and I chose that I don't need a book). But there seems to be quite a bit of research out there in German.

Anyway, which books are you considering? I still think that you're completely overthinking the whole dialect thing, but if they have a preview available, I can try to have a look and tell you which dialect they teach.

Well, I would love to see if a Munster based textbook exists, but I'm not holding my breath. :P

Basically anything except CO will do. In particular these two look interesting:
https://www.amazon.de/Lehrbuch-irischen ... 875483480/ (Which I just realized is authored by Ó Siadhail. I wonder if it's the German version of Learning Irish!)

I think so, yes.

This one doesn't look bad at all as a start, though it says it only leads to A1, and the table of contents seems to confirm that it only covers basic stuff. They describe the variety as "Standardirisch mit westirischer Einfärbung", i.e. standard with Connacht influences.

That could be fun to work through!

What about this dictionary?

Here is a preview. The spelling is standard, the pronunciations seem to assume a Connacht accent (it doesn't say so explicitly, but that's what I take from the two pages in the preview).

Księżycowy, you already have a book in English, and now you want to work through the same book in German? :hmm:

What's wrong with that?

Actually, reading the same book in different languages is always like a new experience. Due to translations, a lot is lost, and a lot is given, so I would say nothing is wrong with that. On the contrary!

I think it depends on how you really want to use your time. I've tried some variations of this idea out before, but it hasn't really panned out so far.

Well, no worries (yet anyway). We're going through Colloquial first anyway.

Ok, curiosity has got the better of me, care to expand?

Also, how do you feel about learning a language through that language? (For instance, what I'm doing with German.)

EDIT: Also, it's been a shitty week, so unfortunately everything language wise is getting pushed into next week. Sorry Vijay.

I'll refrain from giving too many details, but my cousin basically decided I wasn't worth keeping as a friend. So yeah.... Shitty week....

Ah, okay!
Ok, curiosity has got the better of me, care to expand?

I have a number of books that are just copies (or, less often, adaptations) of the same book in a different language as well as some multilingual books and documents. The problem with this is that it takes me a long time just to read one book, let alone the same book in multiple languages, and I've never actually had enough discipline to do something like that effectively.
Also, how do you feel about learning a language through that language? (For instance, what I'm doing with German.)

It's not my favorite method to be honest, but I can do it and have been doing it. IMO it's just another way to get to the same goal, not inherently better or worse than learning a language through another language. I think I just usually prefer studying languages through English because it's easier to find materials for doing that than it is to find materials for learning it monolingually with a dictionary or whatever.
EDIT: Also, it's been a shitty week, so unfortunately everything language wise is getting pushed into next week. Sorry Vijay.

You don't need to apologize to me! Like I said elsewhere, I have plenty on my linguistic plate already. :P Everybody runs into times when they can't dedicate a lot of time to studying, and that's exactly the time when I can try to get caught up on things I've been unable to do for a long time, like (in this case) Portuguese, the Biblical Hebrew lessons Ser did, and the stories in Kalila wa Dimna that eskandar and voron have already read but I haven't.

I'm sorry to hear about your cousin and hope you at least feel better eventually, though. :(
