In my opinion, the sooner you learn them, the better - you don't need any base knowledge to memorize the forms, and once you do it makes things much easier.

Thanks! I've started learning them, and they don't seem as daunting as I thought they might be for some reason.

Thanks! The only phrases I already knew were دنیا بھر میں and کی طرف سے. As far as I'm aware, بھر basically means 'all/whole' (so synonymous with سارا/ساری but always coming after the noun, e.g. دنیا بھر 'the whole world', دن بھر 'all day', رات بھر 'all night').

I'm confused by the phrase اپنی جگہہ in this text in the context میرے لئے یہ پورا لوک میلہ اپنی جگہہ ایک انفرادیت اور کشش رکھتا ہے especially given the English translation. Is there any difference in this context between اپنی جگہہ ایک انفرادیت اور کشش and just اپنی ایک انفرادیت اور کشش? Or is اپنی جگہہ a locative phrase here (something like 'in its own place')?

زیب تن کرنا - to wear
ادھیڑ عمر - middle-aged

بھیڑ bheṛ - sheep, ewe (not to be confused with bhīṛ 'crowd')
قالین - woolen or Turkish carpet

فاخِر - proud
تصنع tasanno - artificiality

I'm going to copy out the whole text here so I can have it in nastaleeq and so I don't need to go onto the gloss website (it hardly works half the time and I can never find the lessons I've already done).

EDIT: Actually the website seems to be down for me so I'll do it if it's ever back up...

I'd heard both of these expression before several times but I noted them down because I feel like I'd never actively produce them myself and they're pretty useful.

Yeah, I'm confused by this too.

That's how I understand it.

باعث - occasion

Also "cause" (کے باعث = because of)

بھیڑ bheṛ - sheep, ewe (not to be confused with bhīṛ 'crowd')

And furthermore not to be confused with its homonym and homophone bheṛ 'ajar'

نہ صرف پاکستان سے بلکہ دنیا بھر سے آنے والے سیاحوں کیلئے کالاش مقناطیسی کشش کا باعث ہے۔

Kalash is the cause of a magnetic attraction for tourists not just from Pakistan, but from all over the world.

ان دنوں اسلام آباد میں واقع لوک ورثہ میوزیم میں سالانہ لوک ورثہ میلہ اپنی تمام تر رنگینیوں اور رعنائیوں کو سمیٹے اس جدید شہر میں مقیم مقامی اور غیر ملکی لوگوں کی توجہ کا مرکز بنا ہوا ہے۔

These days, with its utter colorfulness and attractiveness, the annual folk heritage festival at the Folk Heritage Museum located in Islamabad has become the center of attention for local and international people staying in this new city. [Urdu syntax is so different from English that I don't know how professional translators don't tear their hair out having to reassemble sentences like this one.]

پاکستان کے چاروں صوبوں ، کشمیر اور شمالی علاقوں سے آئے ہوئے ہنر مند، دستکار اپنی صنعت و حرفت کے نمونوں کے ہمراہ یہاں اپنے سٹالز لگائے بیٹھے ہیں، علاقائی فنکار اپنے اپنے علاقے کی لوک موسیقی اور لوک رقص پیش کر کے میلہ لوٹنے میں مشغول دکھائی دیتے ہیں۔

Artists and artisans have brought samples of their arts and crafts from Pakistan's four provinces, Kashmir, and the Northern Areas, and set up stalls here; regional artists are busy stealing the show by performing the folk music and folk dance of their respective regions. :?:

-

اپنے سٹالز لگائے بیٹھے ہیں - can anyone explain the use of بیٹھنا in this sentence? I've always been weak in my understanding of these kinds of auxiliary verbs. I thought بیٹھنا was an intensifier for when something has happened wrongly or accidentally (eg. ٹرمپ امریکہ کا صدر بن بیٹھا) but that kind of negative connotation doesn't make sense here, so I'm confused as to why it's been used.

I'm also unsure of my translation from "regional artists..." onwards - another bit of confusing syntax.

Er, the GLOSS link I posted just before your post has a translation into English, too (I'm not sure how familiar you are or aren't with GLOSS, but just in case you aren't: you can find it in that link if you click on "Source" in the upper right-hand and then click on "View Translation" in the upper right-hand of the little window that pops up with the Urdu text and recording). Here's the passage again divided up into paragraphs, each preceded by their English translation, in case you can't see it (hidden behind spoiler tags in case you don't want to see it, either ):

Well, I feel dumb  thanks Vijay! And that definitely clears up my confusion about بیٹھنا - here it's not an auxiliary verb after all, they are literally sitting.

I didn't know there was a full translation either.

I thought the same thing about بیٹھنا. Why is it لگاۓ بیٹھے, and not something like لگاکر بیٹھے, then?

I've said this before, but by default, the source text is all I ever use in GLOSS because it has so much more than the exercises. :P

Maybe because the process of setting up a stall doesn't necessarily refer to putting up a physical structure and then sitting down but rather is seen as a process that continues long after the person running it sits down? I tried looking up instructions for setting up a stall, and so far, every time I look for them, they seem to have nothing to do with actually setting up a physical stall and everything to do with making good decisions that will help generate interest in whatever you're presenting and avoiding legal problems.

That's what I used to make my Anki cards from GLOSS texts: the original text, the translation and the audio. And all can be downloaded as a single archive when you click on the download icon in the search results, so I never even bothered to open the lessons themselves.

I'm going to start doing this a lot for Hebrew, Turkish, Arabic and Urdu. Why was I wasting my time doing the lessons without the audio?

That's why all I ever use in GLOSS is the source text, because it has translations and audio, too, and it has a hell of a lot more vocabulary for me to learn from that compared to anything else it has. :P
