Old/Middle English Study Group

Postby księżycowy » 2018-11-16, 0:56

After some discussion, I've decided to create this group. As always with these study groups, anyone of any skill level is welcome to join anytime!

I think so far consensus is that we'll start with Old English and we'll probably use A Guide to Old English by Mitchell and Robinson.

Pacing will probably be slow, but I can't say for sure yet. :P

Who wants in?

Group 1

Resource:
A Guide to Old English by Mitchell and Robinson

Check-Ins:
  • §15-21; §22; §63-65 - Due by 12/16/18
  • "How to Use this Guide" section and §1-9 - Due 12/03/18

Me, of course! And yay for starting with OE! There's also the Teach Yourself series (with audio) and an online resource that Michael used when he studied OE for his TAC. I believe it's a course done by the University of Calgary or some other university in one of the (non-essential) prairie provinces. :P

Wha...? Oh, so we can't have Coptic and Ancient Egyptian, but we can have Old and Middle English? :x :ohwell:
EDIT: Ohh, never mind. I see that was just księżycowy.

But yeah, I'm in. Maybe not as enthusiastic as y'all seem to be for some reason, but I'm still in. :P

So, we'll give this a little bit longer to see if anyone else wants to join and then we'll start.

EDIT: Maybe we can decide on a text* to start working on as well?

*As in "grammar/textbook/lessons"

Weren't you already thinking of using Mitchell & Robinson?

I was, but that's my idea. I'm diplomatic, and am willing to discuss it, if anyone wants to use something else.

I mean, I don't think I have a better suggestion...All I have for OE in print is Beowulf and maybe a short passage or two from my historical linguistics textbook. :P

There is also this for Old English, from the organization where I used to work in my last year or so as an undergrad.

Yeah, I know about the U of Texas website. I tried using them before for various older languages, but didn't like the set up.

Well, for whatever it's worth, it doesn't have all that much info in it anyway. :P

So far Mitchell and Robinson are the ones to beat then.

So, how do you feel about bi-weekly check-ins?

Also, assuming we go through AGtOE, how does going through "How to Use this Guide" and §1-9 of Part 1 by 12/2/18?

Not so great, because the version that I have doesn't actually have the "How to Use this Guide" part!

Which edition do you have again? I have the fourth edition: A Guide to Old English Revised with Prose and Verse Texts and Glossary copyright 1986.

As for which resource to use, I haven't actually looked through AGtOE, so I'm not sure how well directed to the beginner it is.

I have a pdf called oe_grammar that's 89 pages and a possible text for us.

(Edit: Instead of including the content of the preface, I realized that I got the pdf from Mike, which is what he used in his TAC. Here is the public-domain digital PDF. It's called "An Old English Grammar and Exercise Book” by C. Alphonso Smith (Louisiana State University, 1896)).

I have bookmarked two sites with OE lessons, which are:
1) An OE course at the University of Calgary
Notes: Apparently the course content was taken down at what looks like the end of January of last year. I was able to find the content, however, through the Internet Wayback Machine.

2) A guide by some random person
Notes: The guide might not be fully finished. In his About this Guide section, the author explains why he decided to write the guide. He apparently started with AGtOE, but didn't like it and he explains why:
► Show Spoiler

There is also, of course, Teach Yourself Old English, which I have and I'm up for using. It does seem to be less technical than AGtOE, but I know not everyone like TY materials. If we go with it, I could provide the audio for it.

So, my thoughts at the moment are, why don't we give AGtOE a try, and if we find it too technical or hard or whatever, we can discuss it and maybe switch to something else?

Oh, and I've also found this: https://www.uibk.ac.at/anglistik/staff/ ... nglish.pdf

Ok, sounds good. So what should we start with? Your suggestion for "How to use this guide" and §1-9 (not sure if I got that symbol correct!) by 12/2?

Yes, that was my thought. I expect it to be a relatively quick reading, as I'm not asking anyone to internalize anything beyond maybe the pronunciation. Basically just get an idea of how the book wants us to use it, and then get an idea of the pronunciation.

Once we start getting into the paradigms we'll start to see if we like this book or not. :P

Ok, sounds good. Will you update the first post with the (bi)weekly assignments?
