Linguaphile wrote:(smi-sma) Öööhpehtæjja (m=f). Dïhte lea ööhpehtæjja. Dïhte lea ööhpehtæjja.

Was it a typo or is there really three Ö's in öööhpehtæjja?

+ archaic Finnish word for teacher (f)
+ Southern Ostrobothnian. I underlined the whole "s/he is" part because I'm not sure where the border between the pronoun and the verb is.
It could be either soon or soon. When you conjugate the verb, you can see that there's always two O's in each person: moon, soot, soon... That's why you could say both O's are part of the verb.
But if you use the verb without the pronoun, there's only one O: on. That's also very similar to spoken Finnish, where there's one O in the 3rd person but two O's elsewhere: oon, sä oot, but se on. So, you could say that only the second O is part of the verb and the first O is just assimilated E from the pronoun se.
However, there's also the alternative variant son, which has only one O. It's possible that this is the original one and that soon was formed in analogy to moon and soot. Also, Meänkieli, which is quite close to the Ostrobothnian dialects, has (se) oon with two O's even when the pronoun is omitted. Maybe we had oon at some point, too - who knows? In that case soon could be a remnant of that. Anyway, you could say again that both O's belong to the verb...

LOL. Just two. South Saami does tend to have more vowels than related languages but not that many more. Besides, the additional vowels tend to be diphthongs. :P
Your inclusion of opettajatar reminded me that Estonian has õpetajanna, so I'm adding that. I'm not marking it as 'archaic' since it really can still be used, but it's more common to use õpetaja for both genders, so maybe õpetajanna could be called 'semi-archaic' (or just plain 'old-fashioned'.) There's also naisõpetaja (f) and meesõpetaja (m), but those truly are archaic. It's a bit like calling someone a schoolmarm in English; the words exist but the more common word for either gender is simply õpetaja.

Funny, naisopettaja and miesopettaja are not archaic in Finnish. :P They're only used when you need to specify the gender, though, eg. if you're comparing salaries or something.

They can be used that way in Estonian too, just as "male teacher" and "female teacher" can be used in English in that context. But as a translation for "teacher" on its own, they'd be archaic.

I see. I don't think they've ever been used for 'teacher' in Finnish. :hmm: It was more common to call teachers opettaja (m) and opettajatar (f).

Couldn't have chosen a different noun? :P The default French translation of "teacher" is professeur, and there's a lot of disagreement about what the feminine form should be. Variants include professeur, just with feminine agreement, and professeure; and less commonly professeuse, professoresse. In the interest of brevity, I'll put just the first two options in my entry.

+ Munster Irish, plus I'm answering the questions for Cayuga, Seneca, and Irish.

(1) Does the pronoun have gender-specific forms?

For Cayuga and Seneca the pronominal prefixes have gender specific forms, yes. For Irish, yes.
(2) Is a copula verb (or suffix) used? If possible, pls underline it.

There is no form of "to be" in Cayuga or Seneca, the verb is "to teach." For Irish, it's the copula.
(3) Does the noun 'teacher' have gender-specific forms?

Yes for Cayuga and Seneca (due to their being based off of a verb form). No for Irish
(4) Does the noun appear in the dictionary form or in another case (as in Polish)?

That's hard to answer for Cayuga and Seneca; for Irish, it's the dictionary form (nom.-acc.).

h34, did you want us to answer the questions? I thought that you just wanted the translations and would look at that to see the answers to the questions. Maybe I misunderstood. Later today I'll answer the questions for the languages I posted if you want me to.

BTW, there's a specific tag for Munster Irish, ga-M.

Banmhúinteoir (f.) exists, but it sounds as obsolete and insulting as English "lady teacher".

I know. I just thought the Irish flag might be more recognizable than that of Munster province.

Yes, I was just interested in the translations because in a way they answer the questions without any further explanations. Sorry about the misunderstanding but thanks to everyone who took the extra effort to answer the questions anyway! I just added them in order to explain why I was asking for a translation of these two (slightly boring) sentences. :)
