I was writing up a reply for 78 and had to answer a phone call, and when I got back Multiturquoise had posted for 78, but I wanted to share these two for 78 because I find them delightful examples of the Celtic languages' use of vigesimal counting:

(cy) daunaw a thrigain (two nine and three twenty)
(br) triwec'h ha tri-ugent (three six and three twenty)

I had heard Danish numbers are a little odd but I've never studied Danish, so I had to look the etymology of firs.

Yes, they are a bit odd. :) But I think firs (from firsindstyve, fire sinde tyve, 'four times twenty') is similar to the French quatre-vingts, although in Danish the short form firs isn't really quite as transparent...

The Welsh and Gaelic numbers are really interesting. Does the Welsh un a pedwar ugain literally mean 'one and four twenty'?

Yes, that is what Wikitionary said about firs. And yes, that's what un a pedwar ugain means. All the Celtic languages used a vigesimal system like that until the 20th century, at least since the later part of the 1st millennium in teh Common Era (prior to that, they used a decimal system like many other European languages). In the 20th century a decimal counting system was (re-)introduced into Welsh, Breton, Scottish Gaelic and Irish by folks who thought this older system was too cumbersome for contemporary life and education--never mind that Basque, Danish and French speakers have been managing well enough with their own respective counting systems. But none of the Celtic languages really completely switched over. Welsh and Scottish Gaelic use both, and so I have to learn both. Breton still largely uses the vigesimal system while Irish is the only Celtic language that now largely uses the decimal system. Cornish and Manx were both spared any fiddling and muckery by people who thought they knew better than everyone else, so both still only have a vigesimal system.

You’re welcome, h34. I tried not to write a whole dissertation on it but suffice to say, Celtic languages have a complicated history, like pretty much any other language.
