Persian videos

Postby eskandar » 2018-08-03, 21:31

We have a thread for music but how about one for videos in Persian?

Here's a cool video about the history of the Tehrani accent:

I find it a very good idea :D Although this level is too advanced for me, because I only have basic notions. I could try to find and post also some easier videos. But no matter the level, all videos would be very interesting for practicing the listening.

These Iran-e Aziz videos are great. Here's one about falafel in Abadan, a good way to hear the Abadani accent.

I've been secretly using LangMedia videos, specifically the first one here and here with the transcripts. The transcript for the Iranian one is pretty unwieldy, though. :P LangMedia also has exactly one video AFAICT with a bit of Tajik, namely the second one here. I've also been using GLOSS, but I'm not sure whether they have any videos for (any variety of) Persian or not.

This is a video (actually a short documentary) I found really interesting in (primarily) Persian with subtitles in English about an Iranian guy visiting Tashkorghan and finding people who speak some variety of Persian there (I stumbled across it while looking for Persian songs from countries where Persian is not the language spoken by the general population):

Documentary about Judaism in Iran. In Persian; no English subtitles, but the main speaker throughout the video speaks very slowly and clearly. Good for learners!

Thanks for this documentary! I might end up using it sometime.

Another one I was thinking I might use, especially because I've been having a harder time finding materials for Dari than for Persian in general so far, is this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yB-bqOwmU6I
Strictly speaking, it's not in Dari or Persian, but a huge chunk of the documentary consists of people in Afghanistan saying how they see the reality of their lives in Dari. There is a bit of Pashto (and of course some English) as well. I like the fact that this is a good opportunity to listen to Dari being spoken as well as the fact that it doesn't just focus on the negative aspects of life in Afghanistan like most Western media about the country seems to.

There's also an Afghan travel series online called "Hai Maidan Tai Maidan," which I probably mentioned before, probably in the study group. Most of the episodes are in Dari as far as I can tell, apart from a few episodes featuring largely Pashto-speaking areas that are partly (IIRC in areas where both are widely spoken) or entirely (e.g. in Kandahar, where Pashto is very much predominant) in Pashto:
