TAC 2018 - Salajane

Postby aaakknu » 2018-06-20, 14:30

This is my new TAC. I hope it is not against the rules. :)

Linguistics

I will participate in Crete Summer School soon. I will take introduction to phonology, intoduction to syntax, intoduction to semantics and introduction to sign language linguistics. I have downloaded from the website all the materials for all the courses, including those I'm not taking. Additionally, I have several linguistic books on my computer. I'm going to learn more about different linguistic theories.
Also, I'd like to read grammars of languages I know or study (Ukrainian, English, Estonian, Spanish, maybe also Greenlandic) if I have enough time for this.

Language learning goals

(en) uni classes
(et) "K nagu Kihnu"
(es) B2
(id) B1

(tl) B1
(zh) A1

Maintaining other languages

(pt-BR) (fi) I'll try to maintain these by reading and listening, but I'm not going to study them actively.

When I'm done with these goals, I will:

1. start creating a conlang;
2. pick an African language to learn;
3. dabble in several other languages (possibly return to Hokkien; Aymara, Javanese, Malayalam, Khosa etc.)
4. study some math (?)

There's no shame in that.

Feel free to join again, if/when you feel you have the time! :)

And we still have Polish to work on together.

What made you decide to quit your previous TAC and start a new one?

I decided to change my strategy, because it didn't work as I expected. I had too many goals and too little time and it made me feel frustrated. I decided to make the list of languages I focus on shorter, because I couldn't manage to learn so many of them at the same time. (Maybe it's difficult to understand for you, because you're able to learn 50+ languages at once  )
I also added linguistics, because learning about different theories is my main interest now, and use for it much of the time I previously used for language study.

It's not hard for me to understand. I myself wasn't always learning so many languages all at once, after all. It's just something I started doing a few years ago. :P

Actually, now I'm kind of curious as to when I started doing something for each language on UniLang. I remember I didn't start doing anything for any language (except posting songs in them and teaching some Malayalam :P) for quite a while after I joined this forum.

I'm replying just to answer my own question in case you're interested/curious. :silly: I didn't start doing any languages on UniLang until early July 2013, about six months after I joined. Then I started with Malayalam, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Latin, Portuguese, Spanish, BCS, Russian, Turkish, and Swahili because I'd already started studying BCS a few years before that and all the others long before that. By the end of the month, I also added Hindi and Thai since I'd started studying those a long time ago as well, plus Oirata (a Papuan language) because I wanted to try something brand-new for a change. In March of the following year (2014), I added Krio, Teiwa (another Papuan language), Quechua, Mapudungun, Lnuismk, and Michif. Then in July, I added Dinka, ASL, Indonesian, Tagalog, and I believe also Light Warlpiri. I started suggesting I would add Arabic and Amharic, too, but didn't actually get around to doing that until last year/three years later.

Ira, you will go to Crete and you don't have Greek on your list? You may try to learn some Greek meanwhile at summer school «θερινό σχολείο».

Update

I'm back from Crete summer school.
It was wonderful! I enjoyed it so much! :) It was even more interesting than I expected. The lectures were fascinating and I got to know many people who share my interest. I'm so happy that I had this opportunity. It was so sad to say goodbye to everybody.

Goals

Linguistics:
* I'm going to focus on semantics and OT for a couple of months.

Language study:
* Going to catch up with Vijay in the Tagalog and Indonesian study groups!

And I almost forgot:
I'm looking forward to the Czech summer school of linguistics!

EDIT:
I haven't managed to learn any Greek, sorry. But thanks for the resources anyway, maybe I'll use them later.

Wow, you're doing weekly and daily goals?

It should be "I quit my/the TAC", or a different verb there. "Quitted" doesn't work there (nor is it a true past tense form of quit). It's also need to specify who's TAC in some way; you couldn't say "I quit TAC."
