This time, I'll start out by posting two Malayalam songs that are not movie songs but rather folk songs that I just happened to stumble across. One is "Mandaarakkaavilu" from the album Kunjippennu, a song about celebrating Pooram, which is a festival celebrated every year in certain parts of Kerala:

The first one is "Chinnum Ven Thaarathin Aanandavela" from Jeevithasamaram (1971), which is a translation of the Hindi song "Jhilmil Sitaaron Ka Aangan Hoga" from Jeevan Mrithyu:

"Swapnangale Veenurangoo" from Thakilukottampuram (1981) is a song I've heard my dad sing many times, but I'd never seen a movie clip of this song or heard the version as sung in the movie (and didn't know what movie it was from or anything). It's one of those sad Malayalam movie songs with beautiful lyrics:

"Oru Kochu Swapnathin" from Tharavattamma (1966) is a song I've heard many times since childhood. This is one of those songs for which the entire movie is available on YouTube, yet for some reason, clips of songs are not available separately, so you get videos with still pictures like this:

"Manjalayil Mungithorthi" is a song from the movie Kalithozhan (1966). This is the first time I've ever heard the whole song sung by someone other than my dad again. The actors here are Prem Nazir and Sheela, two of the biggest names in the Malayalam movie industry at the time (Sheela had played Karuthamma in Chemmeen the year just before this movie):

And this is "Ragendu Kiranangal" from Avalude Ravukal (1978). The title of the movie means 'her nights', and a lot of Malayalee guys assume it's a porno, but apparently, it's a philosophical tragedy in reality. There is a Hindi song with the same tune in the excellent movie Swami (1977):

This is a Christian song from Thomasleeha (1975), which is based on the legend of Apostle Thomas introducing Christianity to Kerala. Apparently, songs like this were intended to attract Christian audiences and convince them that watching movies was not a morally objectionable activity (a very big and common concern among people in the early years of the movie industry not only in Kerala but also in India more generally, since women acting was seen as equivalent to prostitution):

I haven't really seen it since, but I seem to remember it being better than most Malayalam comedies I've seen. Here's one that I'm very fond of but doesn't seem to be very well known. Originally sung by Yesudas for a film in the '80s, I think, but I like this version. Don't ask me what the first line means though--'O singer of the sinless imagination'?

And here is something nice and contemporary. Also originally sung in an older film (Pingaami) but I think this version is actually better than the original, although admittedly the lyrics make more sense when sung by a woman. You can find the original on YouTube as well. It's in very straightforward Malayalam that I guess would also be fairly transparent to a Tamil speaker.
