Check in day!

Unfortunately, it seems Salajane is stepping down from the group. She feels she can't keep up with the workload. I'm sorry to see her go, but understand at the same time.

So, for my "report":
I worked through the first sound drill, and then started listening to the Basic Sentences. I can say that for the most part, I get the basics of tones. I do have some trouble distinguishing the 2nd tone from the 1st and especially 8th tone though.

I feel ready to move on to the first few sentences. How about the rest of you?

My report: I haven't internalized the tone sandhi well yet, but I went through the basic sentences without trouble.

My report I guess is relatively self-explanatory. :P I wrote out the first two sound drills and the basic sentences from Unit 1 and started writing out the Hokkien terms in the grammar section. I also listened to the corresponding audio (a few parts of it more than once).

There's not a lot I can say about how much Hokkien I learned, I guess. I feel comfortable with Hokkien in general because I've heard at least one example of it many times, I'm pretty familiar with Chinese dialectology, I listen to songs in a lot of different varieties of Chinese, and I know Mandarin pretty well. I'm much better at understanding things than producing them myself, though. I feel relatively comfortable about saying, "Chia̍h--bē? Chia̍h--la. Lí--ne?"

Sounds like so far we're ready to actually get into the vocabulary and grammar.

But let's see what dEhiN has to report.

Ok, but since it sounds like you guys might have actually started learning the basic sentences, I'll start doing that myself. :P

I'm going to start adding the weekly assignments to the first post, so people don't have to sift to be able to find them.

Well, hopefully dEhiN can catch up, as I'm assigning sentences 1-10 of Unit 1 for this week.

This is more of a generic point than something specific to Hokkien, but since it's come up in this context, I'd like to think perhaps we can find a way to accommodate different learning speeds/paces. For example, while we can go over exercises and such whenever you're ready, we can also help dEhiN with them whenever he's ready, too. :) In fact, it may even help since then you can also help and you have prior knowledge to go off of.

EDIT: More specific to Hokkien, though, I'm still working through writing out the grammar section examples.

I agree. That's why I said noöne has to feel like they have to catch up. :)

Great!

I wrote out some of the grammar stuff plus the first (non-pronunciation) exercise. :)

At the same time, however, I'd like to keep these "assignments" so that we have central points to focus on.

That reminds me, I've been meaning to ask, how do you guys want to use Spoken Taiwanese? Go through it as we go through Amoy, or save it for the end?

I think maybe save it for the end because we've been pretty much completely ignoring it so far. Of course, with this approach, by the time we get around to Taiwanese, we'll already know most of it anyway, and then it's just a game of "spot the differences," I guess. :P

While I'll still wait for everyone else to voice their thoughts, i think that's a very reasonable, and probably the easiest, approach.

In that case...What if we just ignored Spoken Taiwanese altogether? :para: I kind of hate to say that because you did put some effort into personally making that available to us, plus you may not feel you know what to contribute to this study group and/or the Google Doc I've been working on. It's just an idea, though; I'm curious about your opinion.

Meanwhile, I've gotten up to section B of the grammar notes. :)

Okay. I don't mind using any parts of it with you whenever you'd like, just as long as said parts are available to me. :P

Are you already using it?

No, I've been focusing on Amoy thus far.
