Massimiliano B wrote:I've also noticed that there is a thread about the Kosraean language in the old forum (pre-2009). Should it be moved in the new Austro-Papuan forum?

If I'm not mistaken, I believe we're basically leaving pre-2009 stuff as is. It's kept for posterity I suppose, and because we don't have a space issue. But Luís has been moderating for longer than I have, so he would have to confirm this.

księżycowy wrote:Actually the two I was referencing were the Formosan thread and another one I can remember at the moment. Maybe the Saaroa thread?

Were those two moved? If not, I could do it; do you have a link to the threads?

Now that we've moved past the Australian, Austronesian and Papuan languages, I'd like to discuss about another subforum that has no activities since 2017; the Sami Languages subforum. I recall Irusia suggesting that it be renamed into Uralic Languages and have other threads on Uralic languages added into it. This was first discussed when the discussion to rename the former Polynesian Languages subforum was still going strong, which made this discussion get buried.

dEhiN wrote:Well are there posts in/for other Uralic languages besides Finnish, Estonian, Hungarian and the Saami languages? If not, then is there a need or point?

Here are several threads on other Uralic languages I have found so far.
Uralic Languages Word-Association Game
UL Uralic Café
Erzya & Moksha
Mari
Permic (Komi, Udmurt)
Finnic (other languages belonging to the branch that are not Finnish, Estonian, or Võro)

Personally, I am with Irusia on this one, because this may have a chance of making the subforum much more active than it is currently (or should I say, arise from its grave? :P ) and I've seen some Unilangers actively speak or use minority Uralic languages like Livonian, Mari, Udmurt, and so on.

Are the threads on the other Uralic languages in the Other Languages forum? I don't see anything against creating a Uralic Languages forum. I suppose one question is who would mod it.

I believe they are, yes, but...while there are certainly people interested in it to some degree here, it doesn't look like there's much activity on the threads for those languages, either. It seems the last time anyone posted in any of them was more than a month ago.

What about a broader European or Euroasiatic forum?

And probably too difficult to moderate as well. I believe the idea behind having specific language forums, including some that are grouped by family or geographical area, was to have specific forums for the languages that are active on here. If a language, or a group of languages, isn't/aren't active on here, then there's no need to really create a specific forum for it/them.

Minority languages of Europe? Or something?

Or, I've tried this before, but maybe taking the Georgian subforum and turning it into a South East European something between Georgian, Armenian, Albanian, etc.

And then do basically what you guys are saying with Sami.

I'm just shooting ideas out there and seeing if any stick. :silly:

Maybe we could make the Celtic languages forum into a Minority European languages forum or something?

Don't you DARE touch my Celtic forum, Vijay!
Maybe the Sami forum can be turned into it instead.

I think Reinder should be allowed to say something about that, though. :P

To be honest, though, at this point, it seems like the "Other languages" forum is basically just a minority Eurasian languages + sign languages forum because now everything else has its own forum. Indigenous languages of North America have one forum, creoles (and pidgins) have another, Central and South American languages have another, (most) African languages have another, Oceanian languages have another shared with Malagasy and some Asian languages, and conlangs have another, so all that's left after that is (the rest of) Europe and Asia.

I just want Caucasian languages to have a forum, fuck the rest.

EDIT: And in all seriousness, yes. I agree that any forum that we say could/should be remodeled should get a say.

I think a European Languages Forum can be a thing. Let's just dump all the minor languages of Europe in one place, including Sami and much of the Uralic at least.

Suggestions for the names

Miscellaneous European Languages
European Aboriginal Languages
Indigenous European Languages
↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → B A
Spoiler Alert: Turkish | -30 Thai | Sink or Zapotec

No offense, but adding the words "Aboriginal" and "Indigenous" alongside with "European" feels pretty weird to me.
I'll just put my vote on the first option; Miscellaneous European Languages.

Not all the Uralic languages are spoken in Europe.
I suggest two subforums: Uralic languages forum and Minority Indo-European languages forum (we can include also those outside Europe).

I like this idea. It makes sense to keep languages that belong to the same language family in the same place.
