(es) Cuando el río suena, piedras lleva. [When the river makes noise, it carries stones.]

This Swiss-German (Züritüütsch) variant was too cute not to include:

(en) Where there's smoke, there's fire.
(de) Wo Rauch ist, ist auch Feuer. [Where there is smoke, there is also fire.]
(de-gsw) Won es Röichli isch, da isch au es Füürli. [Where the smoke is, there's also the fire.]
(no-nn) Ingen røyk uten ild. [No smoke without fire.]
(no-nb) Ingen røyk utan eld. [No smoke without fire.]
(sv) Ingen rök utan eld. [No smoke without fire.]

Bernard where did you find the Italian one? I didn't know that and by googling it, it gives pretty much no results. Apparently there's another proverb though (which I didn't know either).

This looks like it should back-translate as "Flame is close to smoke".

Bernard wrote:Fixing Latin

Yep, thank you both! I totally mangled the translation and I know better, so I'm not sure what I was thinking. :doggy: Actually, the version without "semper" has far more Google hits, so that was the one I'd meant to post; it was my translation that was wrong. But the one with "semper" exists too. There was another Latin one which I meant to post also: "Ubi fumus, ibi ignis" (where [there is] smoke, there [is] fire).

Hi Linguaphile!
Latin original: Plautus, Curculio 53 (ed. W. M. Lindsay, Bibl. Oxon.):
Semper tu scito, flamma fumo est proxuma.

English translation (Henry Thomas Riley)
Always, do you understand, flame follows very close on smoke.

Cf. A. Otto, Die Sprichwörter der Römer (i.e. The proverbs of the Romans), Leipzig 1890, p. 137.

Italian translation: Dove c'è fumo, c'è anche fuoco (verbatim, following English and German; by googling it, you will be given some results.)
Cf. https://www.frasicelebri.it/ricerca-frasi/?q=fumo+fuoco
