Apparently this:

Tevhidi kabul etmemiş olsaydım ta ezelden ebede
Bir kör hakikatle ben kafir olurdum.

Hafız Burhan was pretty much the most popular "gazelhan" of Turkey at the beginning of the Republican period. He also used to perform 'mevlid's and it is said that when he used to call to prayer in the European side of İstanbul, people would come out as his voice could be heard from the Asian side of İstanbul. There should be more info about him online somewhere. Kalan Music has done a great job recovering some of his recordings.

This song is so damn catchy! I read the lyrics in English translation and they basically made no sense - sounds like they don't even make much sense to native speakers in the original, either. What's the parody about?

Yeah I listen to it too, from time to time. The lyrics make little sense indeed.

What's the parody about?

It's about the father who does this petty job of street cleaning in order to earn for his son's university education, his only hope being that his son will help the whole family out of this misery after graduation, and the son, who ruins this hope by skipping classes, hanging arounds with girls and abusing his father's bank card. Here are the lyrics:

I like this song a lot. I think at some point kalemiye posted it too several years ago. Were you able to find English translation of it? I can attempt one (it's not going to make too much sense though because of so many allusions in the Ottoman-Persian style).

This singer also has a totally great song in Turkish and Kurdish, together with a female singer Rojda. (It's likely that Kurdish is not his native language, because his pronunciation is somewhat off, but their duo is great anyway).

Rojda - Abdal (Haluk)- Ey Yarim
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iGMEarUSEY

Translation (somewhat literal):

Ey yarim bеn sana sеvdalandım.
Yar yar dеyip çöllеrdе dolandım.
Ey yarim bеn sana sеvdalandım.
Yar yar dеyip çöllеrdе dolandım.

Sеvdan sеrap gibi göründü gözümе.
Sеvdan sеrap gibi göründü gözümе.
Aradım aradım bеn sеni sеvdiğim.
Aradım aradım bеn sеni …

Ez gеriyam wеk Fеqiyê Tеyran
Min pirsî ji еzmanên bê ziman
Min hеwar kir qêrîn kir bê ziman yarê
Min got rastiya min tu yî еy yarê

Min got rastiya min tu yî yarê
Ez gеriyam wеk qulingеk bê pеr yarê
Tu bûyî pеrê baskê min yarе
Wеr bibе pеr û baskê min yarê
Wеr bibе pеr û baskê min yarê
My love, I fell in love with you
Saying "My love, my love" I wandered in deserts
My love, I fell in love with you
Saying "My love, my love" I wandered in deserts

Your love appeared in front of my eyes like a mirage
Your love appeared in front of my eyes like a mirage
I kept looking for you, my love
I kept looking for you

I wandered like Faqi Tayran
I asked the Heavens without a language
I cried without a language, my love
I said: "My reality is you, my love"

I said: "My reality is you, my love"
I wandered like a crane without a wing, my love
You became my wing, my love
Come, be my wing, my love
Come, be my wing, my love

Yeah, there are actually several English translations of it online - none of them very good, but then again, the heavy Ottoman-Persian style makes it so much easier for me to understand the original.

Really nice song! Yeah, even I (someone who doesn't know Kurdish) can tell his pronunciation doesn't sound right...

Very beautiful. Was it recited in an eastern Anatolian accent? I noticed the pronunciation of many words had sounds that I think are absent in Istanbuli Turkish, like the ghayn in peygamber or the qaf in hak - but also the qaf-like sound in kız, which is qız in Azeri for example. What's the story? I heard a distinct qaf in "külli" (O'dur külli şeye kadır), where the original Arabic word has kaf (كلّ as in the Qur'anic verse هو علی كل شيء قدير) - is that a phonetic thing caused by the umlaut?

Yes. The reciter is the author himself, the famous Aşık Veysel. He is from Sivas province in the East of Turkey.

Someone once shared another song by Aşık Veysel in this thread, "Uzun ince bir yoldayım":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UcbHrcFN7c - modern performance (has subtitles)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YZ2JmMUUg8 - performed by Aşık Veysel

This accent is really common in Turkey and I heard it a lot in Istanbul. I'm not sure about its phonological details. I'd thought that 'k' is pronounced as [q] before the back vowels, and remains [k] before the front vowels, but it doesn't explain his pronunciation of külli.

An example of an accent in Urfa:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxA4H--tgo8

I like this kind of accent better than the norm. With its خ, ق and ع it sounds more... Middle Eastern I guess? :)

EDIT: This Urfalı guy from my last link is so epic that I want to transcribe that video.

- Bayanlara haksızlık yapıyor musunuz?
- Yok canım, hiç olur mu, bayanlar güldür ma çiçektir.
- Bunlar sözlerde geçiyor genelde, uygulanıyor mu?
- Yok, yok, uygulanmaz.

Thanks, I hadn't seen this and I really enjoyed it.

I'm gonna try to translate the dialogue with the Urfalı guy in my TAC thread. :D

Listening to Turkish music after such a long hiatus from the language makes me really nostalgic. :(
